Should Levy Go For MoPo?

Article by Marc Ashed

Listen to thee-Spurs Podcast Ep.13 - Ask Brian Lamela!

Mauricio Pochettino is definitely one being considered by Daniel Levy for the -soon to be open- manager position at Tottenham Hotspur. With fans (including myself) calling for Louis Van Gaal, it seems as though we are being considered as second best and that won't make us or Mr. Levy very happy. LVG does not come without concerns either. Insanity, brashness and age all work against LVG becoming a success at Spurs but his record would instantly make him the highest caliber manager we have ever recruited from outside N17. If we are willing to overlook LVG's clear character questions, then I believe we should also overlook Mauricio Pochettino's lack of trophies. Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez who we now regard as massive success stories, won a combined 1 title at their clubs before stepping up to bigger clubs and making us green with envy. Why couldn't we emulate that success with the Argentine currently at Southampton.

What we have in MoPo is a young manager from the Marcelo Bielsa school of thought. He believes in high pressing all around the pitch, free flowing tactics and a taste for the attack that we all crave and think of as the "Spurs way". What is even more important, is Pochettino gives youth players a chance and regards player development as an important virtue aka, he won't be demanding major investment or overhaul. Why should he? Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela are among the top attacking talents in the world. He would have a strong lineup and depth already in the ranks at Hotspur Way.

But if he did crave some investment, surely the sales of spare pieces at the club could fund a raid of Southampton's storied youth system and perhaps a cheeky move for Adam Lallana who quite honestly, is more of a Spurs player than a lot of the lads currently on the wage bill.

Pochettino has Premier League experience, taking a club with a solid starting XI but not much depth into the top 8. His 4-2-3-1 system fits our current roster. His Argentinian heritage will help our most expensive signing ever settle in (if we ever find him). Can he co-exist with Daniel Levy? Look only at his relationship with a similarly looney Chairman, Nicola Cortese.

Should he be first choice? Probably not. When you can appoint a manager who has won 3 different leagues and European titles who could give the club a clear direction, you do it. But if LVG is out of the frame, there is no reason that Pochettino couldn't come in and do an excellent job and dare I say, fulfil a contract at Tottenham. As some have said on Twitter, our flirtation with Van Gaal leaves us with unfair expectations and writing off MoPo would be a direct result of that.

Wants Spurs, check...Players love him, check...Tactical nous, check..Co-Exist with Levy, check...Tottenham ethos, check... MoPo checks off all of the boxes.

As always, I look forward to your thoughts on Twitter, @e_spurs or @GhostOfVDV

More tosh... proving once again that spurs fans are the most deluded in the country.
If MP leaves Southampton, he'll move up a level, not sideways... he has ambition.

Why on earth would MoPo want to go to Spurs?
He has said he is happy at Saints, will be given money in the close season to strenghen the
squad,-he would not go to a club that sacks their manager for ONLY coming 4th in the league.

As for Adam Lallana being transferred as well-you are living in cloud cuckoo land.
And one other thing-for such a BIG club can you get your own song and not use the Saints song?

If you think Southampton as a club are on the same level as Spurs, with regard to history, global fan-base and financial clout, you are the one who is deluded.

  4. Obviously Spurs are a much bigger club than Southampton in every way but, who cares. Neither of us have any chance of ever winning the premier league. All we can hope for is CL qualification and doing a Chelsea and fluking the cup.

I am just not sure if playing attractive football but not being able to compete for the league titles is enough anymore. I am sooo disillusioned :-(

Southampton nice little club but are not in the same league as Spurs. I believe MoPo would come if offered the post.

In terms of your players just one little sniff of a bigger club coming in for them they are off. All players are the same and smack mercs......

As for winning the league why not Liverpool will probably do it with a not very talented squad when I say that excluding Suarez and Gerrad the rest are good pro's. Brendan Rodgers has built his team on solid foundations and work ethic and they are all pulling in the same direction.

We on the other hand sacked our manager a few months into the season, appointed a rookie who hopefully is just there until the end of the season. Onwards and upwards COYS....

People say MoPo won't move from Southampton to Spurs, but money talks. Also, who else will he go to? The top 4 or 5 are settled managers and he won't usurp them so why not take Spurs which is a project and do something with them.

Mopo could well go to spurs but it won't be because 'Money talks' he gets paid over a million a year and will be offered maybe double that to stay. The reason he would go would be he would think that he has taken saints as far as they can go which seems highly unlikely as we have such a young squad. As for our players being 'Off' as soon as spurs come calling well that is nonsense as our players are not mercenaries ie 'Berbatov, Adebeyour etc. They get paid handsomely at our club and are level headed, grounded people who know there best way of developing is staying with us and playing week in week out. Our academy will keep churning out more talent, over the next two seasons, players like Sims, Slattery, Targett and Niall Mason have huge potential, Jack Stephens a CB is currently playing at Swindon and is their best player according to their fans. The future is bright for us saints fans even if the manager and one or two players do go.

  8. Walcott, Bale, Oxlade Chaimberlain, Dean Richards, Alan Shearer, Crouch, Beattie etc etc.
That is why your excellent players are going to be off this summer. Hope we get Lallana...

  9. I take your Pocchetino and raise you with Laudrup.

Laudrup has Premier League experience, preaches "the Spurs way", can bring through youth and has an excellent reputation in unearthing gems (often Spanish) from the transfer market, he HAS won a trophy in England, he is a stellar name in football and a man every player would listen to and, perhaps most importantly for Levy, he is currently unattached and no comp would be paid for his services.

Laudrup is probably the most realistic candidate. Has experience and has actually won something with what was considered a "lesser" squad. Sherwood is obviously not a "people" person. Unfortunately the "media" pick up on every little thing and TS overfeeds them whilst trying to keep the players "under the thumb". After every game its a "cringe" time, (whose he going to rile this time)!!!! Laudrup it must be. Even DL must be looking at the balace sheet and thinking "no compensation to pay.....yipeee!!!!"

  11. what difference does it make who comes in? All we can hope for is someone that gets our collective bunch of misfits to play some great football. A few tweaks here and there like Lallana in Lennon out, Dawson and Kabul out Caulker and Lescott in, Naughton & Rose out Coentrao and Ashley Cole in, Paulinho, Livermore, Sandro out ..... oh xxxx it I cant be bothered with this. We are shite!

Yes you are Shermanator , thats why you absolutely no chance if getting Lallana and you're living in a dream world. of all those players you mentioned leaving us only 1 (ox) has left under these owners the others went when we had so much debt and financial problems. He went for £15 million after one league 1 season! How much will Lallana cost you considering he has 25% sell on clause? 40 Mill minimum. He will only leave for CL first team football, the teams who could afford him can't offer him first team football therefore he will stay at the club he loves.

  13. Last comment....Southampton is currently in massive debt, are they not? http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26813363

I may be wrong, if I am, please clarify

No we are not really, papers love to say we are but in fact it is just transfer fees owed in monthly instalments since we have been promoted to the premier league. Most club pay transfers over 1/2/3/4 years we have spent 69m last 2 summers the 27m 'debt' is what we owe from these transfers. After this season 17m circa for finishing 8th, 60-70m tv money + sponsorship, (osvaldo sale) etc means this debt can be easily dealt with, without selling players we want to keep
