Spurs with a side of Barbeque Part 3

Curbstomping and Taxibuses

Stateside Spurs fan James Pike gives us his views on last nights game against Inter in the latest part of his Views from the Tar Heel State.

That was, for me, the best Tottenham performance of the season. I am really at a loss to say or analyse much, because we were just that dominant.

I think my friends at Cartilage Free Captain (http://www.cartilagefreecaptain.com/ if you want to check them out) summarised tonight’s performance: we just absolutely curb-stomped Internazionale, and we need to get a few more Taxis for them, because one for Maicon just wasn’t enough tonight. I’ve got this right up with the Maribor match as one of our best of the season. Brilliant stuff!

However, there are a few things that I think are worth noting. My MOTM has to go to Gylfi Sigurdsson. He was just everywhere, mailing in beautiful balls (see goal 1) or playing some awesome scrappy football (goal 2). Importantly, Sigurdsson is FINALLY looking like the player that impressed everyone so much at Swansea last year. My hope is that we’ll be able to look back on this game much like we do Gareth’s performance at the San Siro.

And speaking of, it is a little bit of a shame that we won’t have the chance to see that performance replicated in a week’s time. For me, that card is 50/50- naturally, I would rather have not seen it given, but I can see and understand why the referee made that call. To be honest, I’m not overly worried about Gareth’s absence in the second leg- if I had to pick a game that he were to miss, this would be the one, given our success tonight and the tough run of matches that we’re currently in. The rest will probably benefit him- and consequently, us- in the long run.

Our resident RAF fighter pilot, Scott Parker, completely and totally redeemed himself in my eyes from what I thought was a lacklustre performance in the NLD. He looked like the Scott Parker that we fell in love with under Harry- that same kind of dogged, run-himself-into-the-ground kind of work ethic was on tonight. And that’s before we start talking about how great he was going forward. To cap it off, he cleaned up all of his dumb fouls- don’t remember a case where he could have screwed up in a big way with one.

Also, how about the Moose? Dembélé was just a hoss and a boss. I thought that tackle on Zanetti to win the ball back right outside of our box in the first half (which was so amazing that I laughed out loud when I saw it) was pretty indicative of his night. Running everywhere, executing amazing one-twos, and practically running over Inter- just outstanding play from him.

The only complaint that I have with tonight is that we really should have put in double what we did. I’m placing the onus of that blame on Defoe- I felt like between shooting in the box and dribbling around looking for a pass, just about every decision he made in the second half was the opposite of what he should have. He should have been responsible for at least one of those three goals that I thought we could have scored. Hopefully this was
his “shake off the rust” game and he’ll be in better form when we head down south in a week’s time.

In the meantime, it’s off to prepare for LOLverpool. Should be a fun clash, although I hope Azza’s hamstring is alright and healthy for Sunday. I’ll be back then!

From the NC, from the NC, from the NC Tot-ten-ham,

James

Agree with all of this and the fact that it was a night time game added to the special feeling for me.
