Do Spurs need a Kane to support them?

The Tottenham Hotspur striking algorithm is one that has been much debated and much lamented amongst our loyal fans. There seems to be contrasting opinions on our current strikers and the oodles of strikers we have been obscurely linked with in one way or another over the past few years. The main question is: What will our striking force be when the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

Firstly, in regards to players we have been linked with, it seems increasingly probable that David Villa could be donning the lilywhite jersey in time for next season. This seems like good news to me as he has one of the best scoring records around internationally and will be keen to prove himself after falling out of favour at the Camp Nou. However, as with every Spurs target, there are downsides to a Villa move, he’s 31, he’s injury prone, Barca supposedly want £12 million for him and of course, he’s not Leandro Damiao. Villa will prove to be a massive risk if he does sign for Spurs but sometimes risks have to be taken when you are challenging for a top 4 spot and don’t have the financial muscle of United, City and Chelsea.

As for our current strikers, well.....opinion is divisive there as well. Jermain is a fans favourite at the Lane and is one of our highest ever scoring strikers so I am sure there are many who would extol the benefits of keeping him as one of our main strikers and I imagine they would point out his brilliant start to the season and use the reason of injury curtailing his progress as an explanation for the lack of goals after New Year. Personally, I have never been convinced by Defoe as a top 4 striker, instead I find him lazy and become ever more
frustrated with his inability to hit the target or to bury the ball in the net. He is not getting any younger (although Villa is older) so maybe it’s time to cut him loose to find a more potent striker? As for Adebayor, well I’ve always liked him as a striker and he can be a game changer when he wants to turn up and I personally prefer him to Defoe. Of course he was dreadful last season and seemed moody and uninterested but at least he started to pick up form towards the climax of the season (disregarding his awful penalty against Basel). I understand many Spurs fans are pleading with AVB to kick him out and I wouldn’t be too torn up if he went but he can make a difference is all that I’m saying.

The only striker left is young “Hurricane” Harry Kane. This lad who had been our shining youth star for years and years is still only 20 years old. He has impressed at the Under 20 world cup notching a goal and an assist or two so far and he had previously won young player of the year at Millwall last year when we sent him to them in January which is an impressive feat in itself. Sadly, his chance to make a Premier League impression this season stuttered when he suffered a serious leg injury when on loan at Norwich and by the time he was ready to play for Spurs, it was too late and too risky to afford playing him. Despite all his promise, this needs to be Kane’s season to make an impact with Spurs in the cup or as a sub in the league or he faces being outcast with the promise of new strikers coming in and the promise of Shaq Coulthirst becoming common news. If he succeeds though, Kane could be a useful crutch to lean on if the goals start to dry up for Spurs.

  1. Judging by his contribution against Egypt under 20s......we don't need him at all.

When Kane was at Norwich on loan, he was miles off the pace and just not good enough. Nowhere near the Spurs first team.

  3. We are pursuing world class strikers of the calibre of David Villa and Roberto Soldado. Kane has not remotely proven yet that he could play for a lower level EPL team, let alone a team with our Champions League aspirations. Judging by the few cameo appearances I have seen of him both for Norwich and ourselves, his glaring miss against Egypt in the U20 World Cup notwithstanding, I very much doubt that he possesses the talent to feature as one of our strikers next season or any season.

I have noticed in previous games whenever I've seen him such as the egypt game, he has a tendency to miss sitters whenever they come to him, I hope that Coulthirst and Coulibaly can live up to the hype better than he is at the minute.

I agree with your article. Defoe misses more chance than most strikers and has no guile to place the ball into the net. Even Kane would score more than one goal from Boxing day until the end of the season! And contribute more in other ways. Some Spurs supporters prefer hype, glamour and gloss to a hard working young player learning and improving his game.

Defoe goalhangs, and still hasn't got to 20+ goals with the exception of 1 single season in his entire career. That's proof that he is a rubbish striker and not worth spending time on. Bench warmer at best.

Kane is unproven, but there is only one way to prove yourself. If we do infact get David Villa, along with Bale and Kane, I think you have a great setup there, one which Kane will learn a lot from, just like Bale he likes to shot from outside the area mostly, but he is happy in the box to. Clearly he lacks pace, but he will be a strong lad in the coming 2-3 years.

  7. Judging by his first 2 games for England possibly in a couple of years time, but on his last performance no, never. Hurricane needs more loan spells and i'd like to see him play out wider in a 4-3-3 for somebody, but as a striker his finishing is not up to standard. We've had enough problems with dysfunctional strikers already.

He will be well suited in italian league,,he is slow and he threatens to dribble past players but fails,,,he is clumsy at most...too slow for epl...

Harry Kane is useless. Get rid of him. Buy couple of good strikers. Maybe grandad Villa but also a younger talent like Benteke.
