North London Derby Preview

Article by Paul Glanfield

When the red and white half of North London collide with the Lilywhite half goals are often the order of the day. Defending has routinely gone out of the window and with it fans of both sides and neutrals alike have been treated to some absolute feasts of football. In the last three North London derbies at the Emirates the team who has scored first has ended up losing. However, whilst this Premier League derby seems to consistently produce entertainment, it is worth bearing in mind that at the Emirates the results have invariably fallen the way of the home side.

Two crushing 5-2 defeats on the spin already make the 3-2 victory for Spurs in 2010 feel like a very long time ago, and other than that the Lilywhites have only taken 1 Premier League point on their travels to Arsenal’s new stomping ground. Tottenham’s league record at the Emirates reads Won 1 Drawn 1 Lost 5. On four occasions they have lost by a 3 goal margin. Even with the positivity around the club at the moment with the plethora of new signings it would be easy to forgive Spurs fans being a little tentative about their chances on Sunday.

In terms of Sunday’s derby, it really is a case of the old heads vs the new boys in town. Arsenal have still barely added to their squad over the summer and the core of the Arsenal team will be familiar to the derby day atmosphere and can be expected to exude confidence from the recent 5-2 destruction's of Spurs in the past two seasons. In both of those games the Gunners overcame not only early deficits but the clear frustrations of their own fans to bounce back in style.

Spurs meanwhile could realistically field between four and six players never to have played in a North London derby depending on the resolution of their transfer dealings on Friday and Saturday. This could prove a blessing in disguise given many of the existing members of the squad will quite possibly be severely scarred by the recent defeats at the Emirates.

Psychologically the North London rivalry is poised very much as it has been for the last few seasons, with Spurs seemingly feeling they are in possession of a superior team with the chance to finally finish top dogs, only for Arsenal to seemingly deny them that right by the end of each season. Spurs could lay down a huge marker for this season with an impressive result on Sunday which may finally help to turn the tide in their favour.

Spurs have now gone 4 games this season without conceding and with this in mind it is very hard to see them shipping another 5 goals at the Emirates this season, particularly given Adebayor and his suicidal lunges will be a long way away from the stadium on this occasion.
It promises to be another interesting chapter when the sides square up on Sunday afternoon.
