Gareth Bale Nearly Stayed, Holtby Hoping for Silverware and Villas-Boas has no PSG Regrets.

Gareth Bale nearly stayed:

Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, revealed that the new “Galactico” almost stayed at Spurs before signing for Real Madrid.

The Welsh wizard scored on his debut for Madrid against Villareal although the story could have panned out in a different way.

Bale’s transfer hit several snags along the way as both parties struggled to strike a deal and Barnett has suggested that the deal was not always a certainty to happen.

Barnett told Spanish TV's 'La Sexta':

“The deal never fell apart, but it came close on several occasions. It wasn't all peace and love in the meetings. They were tough and problematic.”

Many will be watching the young Welshman this season and he will need to hit the ground running as he will likely be scrutinised by the Spanish media should he not.

Holtby hoping for silverware:

Luis Holtby has been raving about Spurs’ chances of silverware this season and the bustling terrier could have a point.

He said: “Silverware is silverware. There's four cups to play for and you want to win all of them.

If you want to go to the top as a professional footballer you try to win every game and you try to win every trophy.

That's what we are trying to do and we just have to work like we have as a team the last couple of weeks.

We have a big chance of winning something but it is a very long season.”

Holtby admitted that this Sunday’s clash against Chelsea is one of the key fixtures that Spurs need to win if they are to challenge.

Holtby said “I don't want to put that word (title) in the mouth but we are aiming for very high things.

We want to get in the top four, we want to play Champions League. That is the main aim. I think we have the squad to do that, the quality and depth as well.

It's early in the season. Unfortunately we lost the derby but we did the job in winning against the teams beneath us.

We have to keep that up, especially against Chelsea in the London derby, it is very important to win a big game like that to stay up top and give us the confidence we need.

Chelsea is a massive game for us and a positive result can give us the confidence we need for the rest of the season.”

Villas-Boas has no PSG regrets:

Andre Villas-Boas was courted by big spenders PSG this summer as they looked to complete their star studded squad with a top manager.

However, Villas-Boas decided that he was better off at Spurs so that he could build on the squad he had nurtured. The Spurs manager told French daily L'Equipe:

“The fact PSG contacted me was known but I wanted to stay a second season at Tottenham, building on the job I did last season and spending two seasons in the same club for the first time in my career.”

AVB felt that the Spurs hierarchy listened to his opinions such as the acquisition of Franco Baldini as sporting director.

He said: “The club listened to me on several decisions, notably hiring sport director Franco Baldini. I wanted to go on with the project here.

I was attracted by the PSG project, indeed I believe PSG is attractive.

If other people like the way you coach, it is flattering - but Tottenham is a very great club. PSG is experiencing structure change that Tottenham has already done. Tottenham is one step ahead.

Considering the last two years of investments at PSG, the ambition is to win the Champions League, our ambition is to be in it.”

Even though the Portuguese manager was contacted by al-Khelaifi, he said that PSG's interest was never official. He added:

“Did I receive a concrete offer from PSG? We never reached that step in our talks.”
