Football is back! Just as the England Cricket team finally start winning Test matches they find themselves knocked off the back pages once more.

For Tottenham Hotspur, to the Boleyn Ground & West Ham United.

Not where many teams would ideally want to start the season but for Spurs it represents a chance to put last season’s woes against Allardyce’s team behind them and get the campaign off to a perfect start. With the first game at home V QPR to follow, a minimum of 4 points should be gained before Liverpool are welcomed to the Lane. Beating Redknapp’s QPR is a ‘must win’ more for Daniel Levy and his board than anyone else in the stadium that day. There’s nothing the pro-Redknapp media would love more than ‘Arry’ get one over Levy.

As always with Spurs, more comings and goings before the September 1st Transfer Deadline are imagined. Cutting the squad down to 25 as per Pochettino’s wish will be hard, especially as at least one or two more signings are expected. Finding suitors and getting the correct fee for the likes of Dawson, Naughton, Chiriches & Chadli is tricky– Season long loans will be more feasible.

Expectations do seem to of been dampened which can only be a good thing, meaning MP can go about his early days with the pressure, momentarily, off. Each of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United could make arguments for a Title challenge. Tottenham, however, seem rightly to be under the radar & are forecast to finish 6th in most pre-season predictions. However, with no Suarez at Anfield & Manchester United’s big improvement not a given, there is an outside chance of an opening in the Top four.

Whatever happens in the next week before Saturday’s opener nothing is likely to come close to events 20 years ago when Tottenham pulled off the coup of the summer to bring Jurgen Klinsmann to North London. Forming part of the Famous Five under Ossie Ardiles alongside Nicky Barmby, Darren Anderton, Teddy Sheringham and fellow new signing, the Romanian Ilie Dumitrescu, Jurgen scored and of course dived in celebration during the 4-3 opening day win against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. A classic moment in the Premier League era.

Incidentally, Tottenham have only won 3 times when away from home on the opening day of the season in the last 20 years (in 12 attempts), last season’s 1-0 win V Crystal Palace being the most recent of course. Fingers crossed Saturday at 16.50BST we’ll be celebrating again. COYS.

I would say a draw away V West Ham followed by a win V QPR would represent a solid start. I hope you're right though! COYS!!!
