Hopeless Homecoming for Redknapp

Harry Redknapp returned to White Hart Lane for the first time since getting sacked by Tottenham back in 2012. It wasn’t the return he was hoping for.

Spurs made Pochettino proud with a 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. But it’s less about the win, and more about how Spurs executed during the game. They looked like a top four team, and in gracious form made QPR look like the championship side they most likely will be next year. The attack could not have looked better with the likes of Adebayor, Eriksen, Lamela, and Chadli finding hole after hole in the QPR defense.

Many felt Lamela was the obvious man for MOTM but Chadli was superb. With two goals and an assist on paper he looks the obvious winner and I feel like his on field play proved that after a year in the EPL he can be influential in our squad.

The grander point is Spurs have impressed and have survived pre-season, two EPL games, and the first leg of Europa Playoff without a loss. This is all happening while Manchester United can’t even manage to beat a League 1 side against MK Dons. Spurs are top spot in the league and although it’s unrealistic to think we can stay there, one can’t help but get excited over this Tottenham squad. With addition Fazio coming in to support the central defense (Good luck to Dawson, forever a Spur) Tottenham have the depth and skill to be competitive in all competition this year.

Does this mean an automatic boost into the top 4? Well let’s slow down for a second. Eriksen and Lamela will be prone to inconsistency still being young. Injuries affect all teams, but the injury bug always seems to be extra generous to Tottenham when it really counts. It should also be pointed out the two teams we’ve beaten finished 13th and used to be a Championship side as of last year.

If you can’t already tell I’m a cautiously optimistic fan. As a Spurs fan it’s the safest thing to do. AVB had a similar successful start last year and he couldn’t even survive the season.

The best thing for Spurs fans to do now is to put full support in Pochettino. Yes this has been mentioned before but it’s something this club has forgotten after having three managers in a span of one year. It’s impossible for players and the club to settle in and succeed when you can’t stick with a system for over six months.

Now that we have Pochettino at the helm, things are looking up for those at White Hart Lane. For the first time in what feels like forever the team seems under control, unlike the runaway Sherwood Express. The true test will come against the likes of Chelsea, Man City, and Arsenal. But I can’t help, even with my cautious optimism, to look at this season with sparkling eyes hoping and praying for a return to the top of the table.

I think the difference between our current manager and AVB is that even though he had the same wins under his belt this time last season, the style of football played to gain these wins was painful at best, and out right shambolic if I was feeling particularly nasty. If Poch can keep playing a stylish entertaining style of football, I would like to believe the fans would give him more time. The problem with AVB I feel was that the majority of the time the wins felt undeserved and the football we were all forced to watch was painfully dull with Spurs just about scraping a win each time. Against QPR we won and we did it with flair and style and I can truly say that was the first game that has put a huge smile on my face since Harry was in charge.

Now although this was QPR and they were terrible I do feel that last season we would have just about scraped through that game. And therein lies the difference for me.
