Pulling the wool over our eyes

The 2014/15 season is so close that you can finally justify salivating over the prospect of nine months of unadulterated Premier League action.

On paper you'd say that there's a high chance that this season will be as exhilarating as any other in recent memory. With so many teams all outwardly claiming to have league title and Champions League spot dreams, the race will surely be tight. Focusing on Spurs, we're firmly in that pack. We might not boast a Sanchez, Aguero, Van Persie, Diego Costa etc but we do pay the wages of several first teamers who would walk into most teams in the division.

Whatever does happen on the pitch this season it does appear that Daniel Levy has worked his magic once again by turning the spotlight away from himself! Where even the staunchest Levy supporter began to lose patience with the chairman last season, somehow you chuck a World Cup and plenty of cheery pre-season friendly results into the mix and suddenly nobody seems to have an issue with Levy anymore. Well, not this supporter!

This season my eyes will be on the Chairman as much as on the manager and if at the end of the season Spurs have taken another backward step, I will be calling for the chairman’s resignation.

We know by now that Levy demands high standards of his managers. Fail to make target and you're out of WHL but obviously the same rationale doesn't apply for the Chairman's position.

Ask Levy and all the blame for the club’s failings in the last decade fall squarely on the shoulders of everyone else but him! His friends and relatives would undoubtedly tell you Spurs reached the Champions League for the first time while he was at the helm. Stark reality tells you that the club has failed to make the most of that opportunity and to build on the experience. Since that season, Spurs have taken a backwards step. Bad signings and questionable managerial appointments have played a part. That is why Levy is not blameless.

Dealing briefly with player signings, had Levy been the type to leave policy strictly to his manager then he wouldn't be in line for so much criticism. As it is, he takes an active role in transfer negotiations and player signings. For that reason, it is fair to question his suitability for the position.

Fans shouldn't be fooled by the 'Levy is a Spurs fan' mantra. What does that mean? Does it mean that if he does a bad job it's ok because he's a fan?! Utter garbage! The masses have wilfully let the wool be pulled over their eyes - Levy is a businessman whose predominant interest is profit. Of course this may be linked inextricably with success on the pitch but Yiddos should never lose sight of that fact.

If Spurs fail to make top four again this season it's most probable that a lack of goals scored will be the main reason. How many times have we said this?! Whereas Pochettino has had months to address this issue, Levy has had many years. What has our chairman done to deal with the problem? Sanctioning a £28m deal for Soldado is just one of the things he's done. Not pursuing Lukaku for the same sum of money is another. I could go on but any fan should get the point by now.

This summer we’ve made a great signing by tying Loris to an extended contract and by solidifying our back line with defensive signings. Both positive points. The problem however is that each summer we convince ourselves that the squad can achieve great things and yet even before the end of each season we feel let down. My best guess is that this situation is not aided by the continual propaganda promulgating from the Spurs hierarchy which has deliberately stoked desires, beliefs and aspirations! What I’m urging supporters to do is to open your eyes, don’t believe everything you hear and think for yourselves. Here’s hoping for an improvement on last season. COYS!

not sure the point you are making ? Spurs have the 6th largest revenues and therefore would expect to finish 6th MONEY is all in the EPL if Spurs were regularly finishing below 6th you would have a point. Surely you are not stupid enough to suggest we should be able to regularly finish higher than teams with more money ? that would be insane.

Not sure you appreciate what a Chairman actually does in a business. Spurs has a board of directors as well who share in the decision making process so if you are going to blame one, you have to blame all. You certainly don't know what goes on behind closed doors at WHL. You should take your own advice given in the penultimate sentence of your piece.
