Harry Kane – the next big thing?

On Thursday 1st January 2015 I witness the coming of age of a Spurs striker who, barely a year before, was being labelled as another product of the youth academy who would slowly drift away into the lower divisions.

The man in question is of course Harry Kane. As he walks off the pitch at White Hart Lane after scoring 2 and assisting 2 against top of the table Chelsea I start to remember various young Spurs strikers of the past being talked up, scoring numerous goals in the youth team and reserves. Names that spring to mind are Jamie Slabber, Steve Slade and Lee Barnard. However years later they have faded into the non-league game and have never fulfilled their potential.

Of course, for all these you have a certain Peter Crouch who, despite being released by Spurs, eventually fought his way back to the top and went on the play for his country through hard work and dedication. These attributes you would certainly associate with Harry Kane.

When Kane first appeared for Spurs he looked a clumsy kid lacking pace and well short of the standard required to make the grade at a club with Champions League ambitions. With established players like Adebayor and Soldado at the club it did not seem possible for the little known Kane to even break into the Tottenham squad, let alone command a regular starting place.

Perhaps the norm nowadays is for fans and clubs alike to give more time to an unknown foreign import that is believed by many to be the next Jurgen Klinsmann rather than put their trust in a local lad. I for one remember saying to other Spurs fans to give the lad a chance even if, in my own mind, I could only see Kane being a bit part player.

Well this season has shown that with hard work and dedication he could save Spurs from wasting 30 odd million on another foreign flop (we do have a history of that!)

From the latter stages of last season to the middle part of this he has grown from a boy to a man.

He is stronger, fitter, and hungry to succeed and shows a desire that has endeared him to the Spurs fans.

His work rate on and off the ball allows the team to defend from the front and he is certainly a huge part of Pochettino’s philosophy and now ,as pundits speak so highly of him, he has come to the crucial part of his development. He is at an all-time high but he must keep doing the simple things, working on his game and keep himself grounded so he doesn’t fall by the wayside and join the list of players who people say ‘what could have been’.

He will now have to deal with extra press attention and a possible England call up around the corner but I have a feeling that we may be talking about this boy for many years to come and remember the name HARRY KANE.
