As the Spurs fans stayed back and celebrated in the tight corner of Old Trafford designated for away fans, it dawned that Tottenham had just conquered a dwindling Manchester United team at Old Trafford for the second time in 2 years. A great New Years day victory for the travelling North London side and its fans. Is it a fair comment to say that win may have just been the pinnacle of Tottenham Hotspurs 2013/14 season? The year may of started in style but it soon started to go down hill. Similar to that of a car travelling down an actual hill with its breaks cut out. It wasn’t going to end well. That it didn’t, the season drew to a disappointing end in May. Failing to come top 4 once more and failing to win any trophies. A season with nothing to show for except expensive flops whose potential dwindled more than you could comprehend or even want to comprehend. A manager who you couldn’t quite decide whether you hated him, or really disliked everything about him. Although his honesty at first was refreshing, it quickly grew tiresome and at points, petty and too negative. We moved into the summer praying Tim Sherwood would either leave his position as a poisonous manager or the club would finally come to their senses and relieve him of his duties. That they did. As summer dawned, so did a new horizon in the potential hiring Mauricio Pochettino.

Over the course of the World Cup attention and spotlights were away from Spurs from the majority of the Tottenham fans, so this may of given the club some time to go about their business without added media and fan pressure. Shortly after the World Cup had finished we finally had Pochettino announced as our new manager. The argentine had a strong season with south coast side Southampton, bringing them to an 8th place finish and developing some strong footballers in his reasonably short spell at the saints. Once again Spurs found themselves with a young manager with the potential to be something special, and as we know, White Hart Lane can either make or break you as a footballer or manager.

The influx of players in the summer of 2014 wasn’t as huge as the year before, neither were the departures. Meaning there’d be some consistency within the squad, major improvements were looked to be made defensively. As the young Welsh left back, Ben Davies, was signed from Swansea. Aswell as this, Federico Fazio was acquired from Seville for the season ahead. Eric Dier was transferred in from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. USA and Seattle Sounders right back DeAndre Yedlin was purchased from the west coast side but remained there until the turn of the calendar year to finish the MLS season with the Sounders. Benjamin Stambouli was brought over from the French first division team Montpellier. The former teammate of out of favour Arsenal striker Giroud was labelled as a replacement buy for the failed move for other French midfielder and Southampton player, Morgan Schniederlin.

The season so far has been one of major mixed emotion due to inconsistency in results. With an impressive 1-0 away win at West Ham the start to the 2014/15 campaign it hasn’t all been celebratory. We saw Spurs fall to West Brom, Stoke, Newcastle and Liverpool at White Hart lane, the reasons for these home defeats being blamed on a small pitch. However this form was soon turned around with wins being picked up home and away towards the end of the calendar year. We closed 2014 out with an entertaining 0-0 draw at the Lane against Manchester United. Yes, a game which finished 0-0 really was exciting and full of nerves but it’s a game that could really sum our year up. A disgusting first half, with the team all over the place looking like they’re going to concede from ever attack United went on…and an impressive second half full off quick football. Taking advantage of Man United’s mistakes, counter attacking Tottenham football.

After a great New Year’s Day triumph over rivals Chelsea at the Lane it puts us Spurs fans in high hopes. Here’s to a thrilling and successful 2015.
