Spurs set to sign (enter name here)

As another Spurs campaign drifts into an all to familiar abys, the press are already conjuring up more wonderful stories than the hacks and spotty journos at the BBC on election night.

Late last night the Metro (you know, the free paper you use as air con on the tube) covered a story initially publish earlier in the day by Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Both claim that Spurs are on thr verge of beating that lot down the road to the signing of goal sensation Jackson Martinez of Porto. The tabloid silly season looks to be well and truely under way and you won't need me to tell you that this, like many of the other rumours, need to be taken with more than a pinch of sodium chloride.

Firsly, would Martinez, a player seemingly in huge demand by many of the European elite be willing to play for a team who may not even make the Europa League next season?

Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, the article suggests that Spurs are up to their usual transfer haggle, attempting to swap a few Soldados or Adebayors for the Columbian goal machine and a reduced fee. Need I even comment on this?

Sadly for Spurs fans we have all been through this far too many times to give such articles more than a cursory glimpse and ironic smile, however, a striker is very much needed to support 'arry up top as has been evident particularly towards the latter part of the season.

Here's the Fichajes article put through the translation mangle. Enjoy!

"Jackson Martinez will not be in Porto after finishing this season and although several teams are interested in hiring him it would be the Tottenham team that would become their services during the next summer market.

As we have been reporting for several months, the Colombian has decided to make the leap to the Premier League, where we expect the Spurs, who have already closed their recruitment since last winter market.

Porto will enter the goodbye of its star 40 million euros, but the British group is negotiating a reduction in the selling price, trying to include a player in that operation. Roberto Soldado and Adebayor count with many options to be used as currency."
