There, famous words spoken by a legendary Tottenham manager. Now, in May 2016, these words couldn't more true for this current Tottenham team.
There, famous words spoken by a legendary Tottenham manager. Now, in May 2016, these words couldn't more true for this current Tottenham team.
Predicted to get fifth at best by many; that we'd see the case of another one season wonder; that we didn't buy properly; that we were a soft touch; Tottenham have challenged the status quo, not just fighting for fourth, but taking the title race right into May - something that the big clubs have failed miserably to do. Yes, we've missed the final hurdle, losing out to an outrageously consistent Leicester team , but, in the process helping the White Hart Lane faithful to feel the most connected they've been to the club and players in the Premier League era.
This philosophy has been embodied by our young unit - they've been relentless, willing and driven. I remember Tottenham Hotspur being a concoction of flashy and enigmatic, with an irking tendency to be soft and too pretty - now, the only team in North London that seem to display those qualities are that club that come from Woolwich.
Isn't it a reflection of how far we've come, that we see Chelsea, former Champions of England and Europe, in euphoria at holding us to a 2-2 draw - their cup final, the only thing their fans had to hold on to in a dismal season? Rival fans were so quick to jump onto any Spurs slip up, somehow finding joy and delight in this, despite their own teams calamitously failing at key moments all season. The reason for this I believe is because they're scared. Scared of what we are, what we're about and what we can become. Pochettino has created a monster, one which won't lay down for anyone.
I heard snippets from Tottenham fans, voicing their disappointment of how our players conducted themselves in the game at the Bridge. Yes, they let emotion get to them, but to me it shows how much they care about the club, the passion they have and their will to win. It's so refreshing seeing players that actually love the club, such as our own Harry Kane, compared to the multitude of prima donnas whose number one worry is the hefty pay check they'll receive at the end of the week. Spurs have a collection who fight for the shirt, they're passionate and they get it - they understand what it's like to be a fan. They'll learn from the scenes at the bridge and I'm sure Pochettino will assert time to helping them channel this vivacious passion into other key areas of their game.
We used to get beaten in these games by the likes of Chelsea and City, more than beaten in fact, humiliated; Does 4-0 and 6-0 spring to mind? No longer. In the league this season, we haven't lost by more than one goal or conceded more than two in a game. Unbeaten against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea; we did the double over City and tore United to pieces at the Lane. We fight these teams, we've got a bite to us and we don't let other teams mess us about.
The foundations are in place - key players look set to stay; Pochettino has agreed to five more years and we have Champions League football on the way. The likes of Kane, Alli and Dier will only continue to improve on their already excellent performances. Why can't we improve on what we've achieved this season? I hear that echo of glory; I feel that contagious buzz that so many are feeling and I have a strong sense of hope that we can go on to challenge for years to come. I'm thankful to Pochettino for the direction he's taking us, the passion he's instilled and the transformation of our team he's overseen.
These words from our current manager from the beginning of his reign, words that are well and truly being set in stone.
