Worrying Signs?

After the draw with Liverpool we head into the international break with 5 points from three games and unbeaten. But is that masking the worrying signs within each performance?

By Trevor Lloyd @TrevorLloyd92

When you look at how we started last season, we've already improved points wise as we didn't pick up our first three points until we met Sunderland on match day five.

However, when you look at the performances in the three matches played so far, it hasn't been good viewing and there are signs in these games that have me concerned that all is not well.

Eriksen

This for me is the most worrying aspect of our season thus far. He appears to have lost all of his energy, drive, work-rate and bottle. Giving the ball away in important areas, pulling out of tackles and being slow to react is not what we were hoping for from our playmaker. When things are tight and he is doing this, it puts us on the back foot. He is still yet to sign his contract and maybe his head has been turned elsewhere, with rumours of Juventus being interested having been around for the past 2 years. I hope this is the not case as I love Eriksen and think when he plays well, we very rarely lose.

Our Bench

I touched on this in my last piece and it scares the hell out of me. Our current bench is so void of any quality or game changers that it really could cost us again. Can anyone honestly tell me that the bench we had against Liverpool, with Winks and Onomah, are better alternatives than Son or Chadli? Both seem to be following Mason and Bentaleb out of the club, which without replacing them, could become a massive problem if injuries mount up.

Players Being Exiled

Players of last year, some of whom played in vital games and stepped up well when needed, can't seem to make the bench this season. Players such as Chadli, Son, Wimmer and Trippier. Again, this is a strange/confusing situation as Son, Wimmer and Tripper have all played played well when Pochettino has called on them.

In fact Wimmer filled in so well when Vertonghen became injured that many fans, including myself, thought it was harsh when he was dropped as soon as the former was back from injury. He even signed a new deal in the summer and now seems to be cast aside.

As first seasons go, Son had a fairly good one and really came into his own after Christmas, scoring some vital goals and assists. He quickly became someone who could change the course of the game when he was brought on. Again, he has to be a better option than Winks off the bench when we need a goal.

Finally, when Walker went off against Liverpool, he was replaced by Janssen. Pochettino after the game commented: “Walker going off changed our game plan”. But in Trippier's first season, the manager rotated his full backs in virtually every game from December until January, with Trippier coming in for Walker and playing very well. He plays a similar sort of game as he likes to stay wide and get up and down the pitch.

Where has the High Press Gone?

A massive feature of our game last season is nowhere to be seen in the opening 3 games this term. Not even the energetic players like Lamela, Alli or Kane, seem to be chasing and pressing as much, closing down in the final third and winning the ball back.

We scored a lot of our goals by forcing the opposition into mistakes and with Liverpool's defence being poor on the ball, as Burnley proved last weekend, we didn't once rush them or make them panic. Hopefully, as the months go on and the players get their match fitness and sharpness back, this aspect of our game makes a comeback.

I really don't want to come across as being too negative as yes, we have 5 points in the bag without playing our best football and we are clearly missing Dembele. But despite being unbeaten the signs are there for us all to see. We have Champions League starting soon and that will be a massive test for us and our depth, and as I ended my article a few days ago with a plea for new signings, I can only hope that the club are not done in the market.

  1. I agree and have been saying the same thing on various blogs. My biggest current concern is the appalling lack of quality we have on our bench. Aside from Son who can Poch bring on to chase a game?
I cannot believe that Wimmer appears to have been exiled either - his performances for us last season when Jan was injured were very impressive indeed. If we carry on shedding players like this then Levy won't have the time to get them replaced, bearing in mind how long it takes us to buy in.
Let's hope something nice happens before deadline day.

Pochettino is just showing how far from the real deal he is - his ego means that players who've offended him in some way are frozen-out, regardless of the detrimental effect on the club, and against the genuine top managers who're now in charge at the usual Top Four his lack of tactical nous will be shown-up in a way it wasn't when they were in turmoil last year - this year will be a big test, which I very much doubt he'll pass.

I been saying this from the start, just because we haven't lost the fans seem to brush it aside. We are in CL and have kids on the bench. Every prem club has bought almost 5 players or more apart from us, Hull and West Brom. This new stadium is costing us already and tbh by the time it is built the fans will be so frustrated with lack of signings and performance.

  5. This is nonsense.

Wimmer isn't fit. Son came back late because of olympics. Eriksen has ALWAYS bottled challenges. He's lightweight but I agree he's been poor otherwise. We still have Dembele to come back. Lloris to come back. Nkoudou to come in. Possibly one or two more.

    Don't panic.

MP says all are fit yet another source says Wimmer is injured . I would hope Wimmer is injured because he was very good when needed last season . Only 3 players can be used from the bench thus once Dembele is back plus the guy from France joins we can strengthen the bench . My concern Saturday was why Josh and not Son . Is Son another MP has decided is not for him ??

Agree completely. Lack of activity a worry and we cannot have a massive clear out without replacements being brought in. Delighted Vorm proving the doubters wrong.

You know the way we are heading from the quality, display, attitude and dedication. At the moment all signs indicate bad news. Like Stuart Pearson said - at best Spurs are C+. Lamela is good one game in 15; Delle is now very ordinary and he has to control himself -Kane is left helpless- our forwards lack speed and urgency. Our passes are slow and inaccurate passes or lack of desire to get there 1st and by the time we get forward we are done - the opponents know our move and all doors are shut. Our attempts lack power and by far are few, we are overall poor at taking corner kicks .. in the end only those with big margins will make the grade. I wonder if MP has become so confident that he never looks back at the poor performance videos? Spurs were lucky last season as all teams were below par. This season is different ball game.. I think we will regret losing Chadli who on average is better than Lamela and the youngster who loved Spurs but we let him down - Nabil B. With this team and bench we are going nowhere not even the 1st leg of CL.
Lastly, being passionate about Spurs - I hope we sign a few good players and I am proven wrong in my future assessment of where we are heading.

  9. What worries me is that quite a few of the signings that MP actually brought in himself have not worked and have either been shipped out already or are rumoured to be 'not in his plans'... Fazio & Stambouli lasted no time at all and now talk of Son going after only one season, bearing in mind we paid in the region of £22 million for him. Is this showing that MP does not have an eye for top quality players that will fit into the Spurs ethos? If MP does not spend money then he is in a no lose situation - if the academy players do the business then he looks like a genius while saving the clubs tens of millions, if they don't then he hasn't spent any money so Levy will love him. I think Janssen will prove to be a revelation at Spurs as his work rate is phenomenal but one player cannot make a season. We have dragged on so long we a couple of 'yet to be completed deals' that it is becoming embarrassing but as Spurs fan we should be used to this with Levy in charge. Let's stay optimistic until we are disappointed on Transfer Deadline Day! COYS!!!!!!!

  11. I have to agree and good article! I've supported the spurs forever and the lack of activity is very worrying I know it's early days but we should have had a settled side with new players within our squad and not leaving it till last day.

  12. In fairness, Son so far has been away on Olympic duty, and Walker been our best player in first 2 games. Tripper actually only started 5 PL games last season. The rest, I can see where you are coming from. But it's early season, we were poor for the first 5 games of last season (even at Sunderland on our first win). Team pattern will be back soon enough, Poch himself said they have concentrated more so far on fitness, than actual tactics/team play.

  13. Wimmer has an injury. Chadli gone. Mason almost out. Idk about Carroll and his contract. I don't think Son will leave. Hopefully 1-2 wingers. And a quality attacking mid.

  14. You have misrepresented the manager entirely. The fact that we tired towards the end of last season was down to the high press, Poch has prob seen this and told the players to not go all for it. If was bad enough towards the end of last season and it showed in the performances, do you really want the same thing to happen before our 2 last home games, against Arsenal and United? As mentioned earlier, Wimmer is injured, not in Exile. I agree with you on Eriksen, bug why should he not trust the young players on the bench? How else are they supposed to develop?? Bit of a kneejerk reaction piece..

  15. Joe.b.

What happens if refs continue to penalise wrestling and martial arts by defenders of corners, etc. Overnight jan and a couple of others will be liabilities. So many of our defenders havent headed a ball away for years, preferring to keep their attntion locked on opposition jumpers.

Lowest goals conceded ?? I dont think so.
