The Dam Busters

One phrase has defined this amazing year. No, not "Brexit means Brexit".

The phrase that keeps on giving is: "Spurs have been flying under the radar".

And how all Spurs fans must love it!

Article by Steve Johnston

Just what is this "radar"? Surely it is Sky's ring-fenced adoration of the moneyed elite, the so-called big four now thankfully being well and truly Trumped by the outsiders in lilywhite.

Being "under the radar" means not being part of the media's obsession with talking up Mourinho, Pep and co. and not being part of the narrative which accepts that mega bucks ownership will guarantee success.

Yes, Spurs have been flying under that radar of hype, but we have also not been given enough credit for a steady improvement over a decade now, first creeping into regular top four contention and now arguably the best and most complete team in the land.

Certainly 2016 overall has seen Spurs achieve the most consistent form of any Premier League side. Yet even last season's brilliant run, from a club that hasn't won the title for more than 50 years, was brushed aside by many pundits who viewed it as nothing more than a blip.

Spurs were outdone in the fairy tale stakes by Leicester, a side that flew even lower under the radar.

Instead we were portrayed as the bad guys, the party poopers, and then during the summer transfer frenzy we were more or less told by all and sundry to go back quietly to where we belong - sixth place maybe. There there, well done, now push off and let the big boys get on with things.

Now here we are, unbeaten in this new season, playing wonderful stuff, without key players, bursting City's bubble, and looking good for another title tilt. The media narrative is in tatters.

The way that Poch has built on the firm foundations laid under successive regimes since Martin Jol's arrival a decade ago is mightily impressive.

What we are seeing on the field is a reflection of what is happening just off it. The gap at the north-east corner of White Hart Lane gives us a tantalising glimpse into Tottenham's bright new future - building on the footprint of the grand old stadium, with its fantastic tradition, and creating a showpiece arena that is truly fit for a winning side.

Poch is doing the same on the field - building on the club's glorious tradition of attacking football and creating a modern, super athletic and combative Spurs. A team certainly built to last.

Spurs have been in and around the top four for a good few years now. This is a genuine title-challenging team. How the pundits are spluttering!

So when it comes to flying under the radar - missing out on all that hype surrounding Sky's favoured few - then Tottenham Hotspur have actually flown much further than anyone else.

We have actually flown right under the radar, dropped a couple of bouncing bombs, and burst the bloody dam!

  2. Do us all a favour, mate, and allow us to STAY below the radar. We have no need for the praise of the fickle supporters of the rich lot, because we all know why they do it. We are much better off playing in our well-organised, robust and thoughtful way, and being ignored. Look at the nonsense we had inflicted on us by the nasty cheatski boo boys at the end of last season. It also allows us to leave the emptycraters to their own game of undermining their manager in their own inimitable way. Just be quiet and enjoy the ride!
