Tottenham On The Up

Article by Matt Wilson @Yid4Life_COYS

A great weekend for us Spurs fans as we finally saw our players and team play just like we did last season. We looked strong, ready, energetic, and motivated. A 5-0 victory in the Premier League is never easy, but we made it look so.

Now we look ahead to our final Champions League game this season. We are at Wembley, where we host CSKA Moscow. The Russians have performed EVEN WORSE than us in the group stages, and this game will be a battle for third place. Coming third will mean we gain qualification into the knockout stages of the Europa League. In this article, I will explore whether winning on Wednesday would be beneficial or not, as controversial as that may be.

Now, of course, staying in competitions enables us to win some much missed silverware, and being starved of trophies in recent years means that we could do with winning something. I see the Europa League as the easiest to win of the competitions we remain active in this season, thus, I want a win on Wednesday.

However, it is clear and understandable why people would now want to focus on the league challenge, especially after Pochettino used the excuse of sacrificing the Champions League in favour of the Premier League. For me, winning the league is too ambitious, but getting top 4 is more than within our reach if we were to focus on it – meaning we sacrifice the FA Cup and European competitions. However, I am also concerned that the cycle we experienced this season may be repeated. Qualification, failure, sacrifice all competitions, Repeat. There’s a simple way to prevent this, signing big in future windows. (You can explore this theory in my last article.

Another, personal reason that I want a win on Wednesday is because I have spent thousands to watch Tottenham live, and I’ve only ever seen them win on two occasions! Hopefully, I am not a bad luck spell!?

Christian Eriksen spoke to the press on Tuesday morning and commented that the players feel the need to show the Wembley crowd what they can do, as they owe fans a “massive apology”.

This is exactly what we needed to hear. Furthermore, I am massively impressed and excited by the 2 new contracts signed by Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen. These two players signing long term deals clearly indicates that they feel there IS direction and ambition within the club.

Overall, I do hope that we can get that win on Wednesday night and progress into the Europa League, and hopefully become serious contenders for our first European trophy in more than 30 years.

Thank you for reading this (shorter than normal) article. I am very excited to visit Wembley again, you can catch my matchday snaps via my Twitter!
