Why Harry Winks will become a Tottenham star

Article by Harvey Simpson @Hotspur_Huddle

Mauricio Pochettino has built a reputation for nurturing young, English talent into established international footballers and it looks increasingly likely that Harry Winks is the next name on the list of Pochettino graduates. The young Londoner has been rated highly by Pochettino, ever since the Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2014, and Winks spoke about his first encounter with the manager in a recent interview with The Guardian, stating he was ‘gobsmacked’ that the manager wanted to sign him up. Winks has caught the eye with convincing performances following his ideal debut, in the derby against West Ham, in which he scored his first senior goal to set the team up to win 3-2, with two goals coming from Harry Kane in stoppage time. The early indications are that Winks will go on to become a recognised member of the first team at Spurs and Pochettino can take full credit for the Englishman’s talent.

Talent and Skill

The one aspect of his game that has impressed fans and pundits alike is Winks’ passing ability. Controlled, measured, accurate and always looking to go forward, Winks’ game has thrusted himself into contention for the starting eleven and it is most likely that he will get the opportunity to start the game against Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup this weekend. His sheer quality was highlighted in the Champions League fixture against CSKA Moscow at Wembley Stadium before Christmas. His efficiency in possession was underlined with his 96% passing accuracy whilst his importance in the victory was emphasised in the fact he completed the most passes of anyone in the match.

Confidence

His ability to play on the big stage shouldn’t be underestimated and Pochettino certainly trusts the player, looking at the way in which he introduced him as a substitute into high pressure fixtures like Chelsea and Manchester City with confidence. The contrasting situations of the games also indicate the extent of the faith placed upon Winks; whether it is to hold on to a victory like in the Chelsea fixture or to grab an equaliser as in the Manchester City game, Pochettino never shies away from introducing him, irrelevant of the situation. Winks confidence in his ability has allowed him to slot seamlessly into the starting eleven.

One of our Own

Winks joined Spurs as a five year old and has a unique bond with the club, his father being an avid fan taking Winks to his first match aged five or six. He recently spoke about the impact of the ‘Duel of the Fates’ music which greets all Spurs players before kick-off, revealing how he still gets a ‘buzz’ playing for Tottenham, the team he grew up supporting as a young, aspiring footballer. Pochettino has a special association with the youth academy at White Hart Lane, regularly going to oversee youth matches and introducing the academy potentials to first team football. The Argentine was essential in the development of players like Harry Kane, Ryan Mason (now at Hull) and Nabil Bentaleb (on loan at Schalke) and it is hoped that Winks will go on the same upward trajectory as Harry Kane’s successful career thus far.

Winks will be given another opportunity to impress in the Wycombe Wanderers FA Cup fixture this weekend, as we look to maintain our unbeaten record at home this season and it is more than likely he will grasp it with both hands.

Do you agree? – will Harry Winks become a star as Harry Kane did? Will he impress again in the FA Cup fixture on Saturday (28th)? What does the future hold for the talented Englishman? Let me know in the comments section below or send me a tweet @Hotspur_Huddle
