Diary of a Spursaholic – Post Basel 2nd Leg

I am writing this directly after the disappointing finish in Switzerland; in an attempt to capture the pure emotion of us Spurs fans.

I don’t really know what to say, I am literally gutted; I was hoping for a cup win this year, a win that would state our claim as a team on the up. I also really wanted Chelsea in the final; so the story of AVB could be completed. I really wanted us to pull this out the bag, but, I could have guessed that this was the fate of Tottenham tonight.

Watching the match with my family (Spurs fans throughout), emotion was high and tension was higher. For every negative action, there was a positive reaction throughout that match, which gave the suggestion that this was our time. When we equalised to make it 2-2, I thought this is us going to get the third, and it came so close. When Basel hit the post, Dawson making absolutely incredible tackles, and then the ball doing everything but going past Freidel, I thought this was our time. When all my instincts, knowledge and previous experience told me otherwise, I thought it was our time. But it was not to be. My frustration with Huddlestone’s penalty for not simple smashing it straight is setting in, and my aggression towards Ade, for, well…. WHAT WAS THAT!?!? Is definitely lingering around the atmosphere.

Looking at the match there is no question of passion, commitment and dedication from the players tonight; they ran their socks off and more. Dawson played till he couldn’t stand, and then continued to play. Jan played at a standard that we have come to expect, and was unfortunately left in no man’s land when his defensive partner drop him in it for his sending off. Holtby looked lively, eager and a touch of class, we needed to play more through him tonight. Dembele decided that today, passing wasn’t his preferred skill to execute. It happens and hopefully he moves on quickly. We saw the best and worst of Walker, and Carroll and Huddlestone both played decent enough.

To be fair to Basel, they were very good, their performance at the Lane justifies their progression in the competition, and tonight, they did what they needed to, so I am not going to take anything away from their performance. On another note, anyone agree that we should go that Stocker and Streller? Think they would fit in nicely for us and might not break the bank. Anyway, good luck to them in the competition, they will be tough for anyone, including Chelsea. I am going through that phase where I am going to convince myself that Chelsea’s continued participation in the competition could indeed help us in our pursuit of the CL Promised Land. A long distance trip to Turkey would be great for us, and Rafa’s eagerness to win something at Stamford Bridge could keep their goals split.

This is of course counted with items including Chelsea being used to competing in European games, and that we still have to keep the pressure on them, but that’s for another day. Right now, let us thank whoever we need to thank for our game against Chelsea being postponed. If we played that, and lost, our Champions League hopes would be over, and we would have failed our objectives for this season within 4 days. Don’t know if I, you, the team, the managing staff and everyone involved with Spurs could have handled it. However, this is not the case, we now have some time to recover, recoup and recapture our form in a final charge to the finish line. This is what I think we need to do; please comment and join the forum to give us your opinion, my father just gave me his, explaining that I have let Adebayor off lightly, do you agree?

  1. I wonder if there was a single Spurs fan who thought Adabayor would score his penalty - the guy just cannot strike the ball only sidefoot.

Yes Tony, I agree with your Dad I do think you have let Adebayor off lightly, way too lightly in fact. Take the penalty miss away, which was so bad it was criminal, he was even more guilty in my opinion of swaning around with that stupid grin on his face while his collegues were sweating blood, how he can look Dawson in the face after that cameo of a performance. He has talent but only uses it when he feels he wants to. I have followed Tottenham since 1958 I love the club as we all do and I can forgive anything except for a lack of fight and pride in wearing the white shirt. Him grinning every time he lost possession or messed it up does not sit well with me at all, but over and above all that is his apparant total lack of interest and effort. Never had any sense of urgency, never strived to make something happend, just gave up, ambled back into position with that grin on his face. Im sure some people will disagree with me but that is my honest opinion. As for the rest of the lad's well played you tried as hard as you could, the pitch did not help but it was the same for Basle, and well played to them, they deserved it over the two games.
