Franco Baldini and the impact of a Technical Director

It has not been a well kept secret that Tottenham has been looking for a Technical Director for almost a year. Franco Baldini and Txiki Begiristain were the hot names and with the latter joining Manchester City, it looks as though we are honing in on one of our main targets. I wanted to examine the change in vision and dynamic of the Tottenham front office if Baldini were to take a prominent role and also his track record at Roma in a similar capacity.

At Tottenham, Tim Sherwood has been acting in a similar role for the past year. His vision resembles the old guard more than AVB's and with Sherwood's aspirations to wield significant power, there is friction between the two. If Sherwood were to not be promoted, he would likely end his tenure at Tottenham to pursue the same opportunities elsewhere. 2 Levy's are worse than 1 and with Sherwood, Levy has his thrifty, bargain loving sidekick in place. For the sake of AVB and our progress, Tim Sherwood going elsewhere would be a welcomed departure.

Baldini shares a vision similar to AVB. They both seek versatile players that play possession based, stylish football. He also shares a sharp fashion sense with AVB but that's neither here nor there. Baldini came to Roma at the same time as Luis Enrique and desired to replicate a Barcelona type system as quickly as possible. Enrique lasted one season and Roma has been unsettled since. At Roma, Baldini has seemed to have a falling out with Walter Sabbatini, the club's Director of Football which would open the door for his departure to North London. Players that were brought in under the Sabbatini/Baldini duo include: Erik Lamela, Bojan Krkić, Maarten Stekelenburg , Gabriel Heinze. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, Miralem Pjanić, Fernando Gago, Simon Kjaer and Fabio Borini. An impressive list of players signed in just 2 years. All of those signings reflect a vision to the future and a keen eye for talent.

AVB has given his approval and support to hiring a Technical Director, "I have worked with one at Porto and Academica and had no issues with that and I certainly promote that," Villas-Boas said last September. Franco Baldini knows the English game from his experience with the National Team and would be a solid addition to the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. With an AVB supporter in the Tottenham camp securing future talent, a strong youth system and a senior team on the brink of Champions League qualification, the next few years at Spurs could be record breaking.

Onwards and upwards, Come On You Spurs!

  1. Hi Marc,

My name is Arya from Indonesia.

I think Baldini's appointment would help AVB focus on his coaching duties, where Baldini - whom I notice recruits a lot of interesting players from Argentina & Brazil during his Roma & Madrid days - would do the transfers.

It's important that both of them shared the same philosophy as if AVB got the sack or move clubs, the players bought were purchased because they represent the same type of play.

One thing I'm not so certain is whether Baldini was responsible for Roma's transfer in the 2011/12 season.

From wiki & transfermarkt, I noticed that he only joined in mid season 2011, so my thought was Sabatini were the one doing it. The transfers too - in total of almost 80 million pounds - doesn't sound Baldini-esque (excluding his time in Madrid). Too many from European clubs, & not too much from other Italian clubs.

Other than that, thank you for the article & cheers from Indonesia Spurs.
