Article by e-Spurs Writer Brent Weber (USA)
I know we were all hoping for victory at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, 3 points wasn’t meant to be. Spurs fought valiantly to salvage a valuable point and keep our top 4 hopes alive. Spurs are down but not out! They are no longer in control of their own destiny. Spurs must now focus on influencing their destiny by winning their remaining 2 matches. If Spurs win out, they will finish at 72 points, which will put tremendous pressure on Chelsea and Arsenal, and with a little luck finish in the top 4.
Chelsea has a quick turnaround and travels to Villa Park for a “Sandwich Match” on Saturday. They are coming off a tough draw with Spurs and the Europa Final is in their sights. Chelsea could very easily get caught sleeping at the wheel and allow Villa to steal a point. Their final match is against an Everton team that wants to send their beloved David Moyes out in style. Unfortunately, Chelsea only needs 3 points in their remaining 2 matches to finish in the top 4 due to their superior goal differential.
Arsenal face Wigan, a team fighting to avoid relegation, on Tuesday. Wigan face City in the FA Cup Final on Saturday which could leave them fatigued, but I still believe they will test Arsenal. A Spurs win versus Stoke on Sunday would put us ahead of Arsenal in the table and add even more tension to their match on Tuesday. On the final Sunday, Arsenal travel to St. James Park to play Newcastle, another team fighting to avoid relegation. Neither of these matches will be easy for Arsenal, especially with a little added pressure from Spurs.
Although Spurs no longer control their own destiny, they can certainly influence their destiny by taking care of business against Stoke and Sunderland. We need 6 points to keep our hopes alive and keep the pressure on our London rivals. I am not saying with any certainty that Spurs will finish in the top 4. I am saying that we still have a fighting chance if we get to 72 points. I am also saying that anything is possible heading into Survival Sunday. You just never know what will happen and Spurs might just get lucky!
