Time for Spurs to be the Early Birds

“New season is coming around,
With new players all Tottenham bound.
So all down to the Lane,
To get top four again.
And bring Champs League to our new home ground.”

There are only 6 and a half weeks to go until the start of the season and the usual worrying signs seem to be far off this time round. With the imminent arrival of Paulinho at Spurs, maybe we are going to do things right for once and get a settled side in time for pre-season.

In recent years, we always leave it late with our signings and predominantly pay the penalty with a usual shaky start. Let’s use last season as a prime example.

I’m one of the people who actually thought Clint Dempsey did a decent job for us last season but, as we all remember, he pretty much boycotted training and playing for Fulham before he signed for us with literally a minute to spare. Therefore, he had no pre-season, no time to gel and no time to become a settled member of the squad. The same went with Van Der Vaart in 2010. Now obviously Rafa settled in pretty quickly, but let’s be honest....Dempsey is no VDV.

Maybe Levy has learnt from his mistakes of the past, maybe AVB has had a word, or maybe it is the acquisition of Baldini that seems to have got Spurs making more movement in the market this early, but whatever the reason, it’s very welcome.

I feel I must play Devil’s advocate here as well though, so please forgive me Spurs fans. Last season we had already picked up Vertonghen and Sigurdsson by roughly this time, but we STILL didn’t buy a striker and STILL made panic buys on transfer deadline day.

So while I am delighted with the apparent signing of Paulinho (still no confirmation from Spurs yet, rather worryingly), and the fact that we clearly are looking for a striker or two (The David Villa stories seem promising), and have seemingly kept Real Madrid at bay over the Welsh Jesus, there is still that little niggle at the back of my mind that keeps telling me that the hard work has yet to be done. Actions speak louder than words and as yet, there really hasn’t been that much action to be honest. At least when you compare it to the Liverpool’s, the Sunderland’s and the Villa’s who have added a lot to their squads already.

We need to have a settled squad not by the start of September or October but by the start of August. We need to integrate the new signings into the squad as well as the young players who have returned from loan and who may push for a first team place (Smith, Townsend, Kane et al). We need to have our gaffer’s knowledge of ALL the players at 100% for the start of the campaign.

And above all, we NEED to hit the ground running and start the season with the same kind of results that we usually get during our inevitable purple patch from October to February.

One thing is for sure though, it’s Tottenham, and it’s sure to be one hell of a ride!

COME ON YOU SPURS!!

  1. I agree , I want more tangible things but accept that negotiations are never that straight- forward . I think that Mario Gomes is more realistic and would probably fit better ( Gomes , villa and Bernard as a fall-back ) . Christmas here we come and this time post Christmas too .

Re. the announcement over Paulinho (don't worry - he's ours, just needs to clear the medical) it could be that Spurs are going to unveil a "double whammy signing" in one go ?
Probably you can forget Gomez and def Bernard, the latter out of our league right now, or put it this way; if we got Bernard we'd have no money left for 1 striker !
No, realistically Villa is more likely, the other one not being mentioned could be Osvaldo from Roma - remember the Baldini connection ? We could nab him for £11m-13m if Levy's in the right mood for a bit of bargaining (when isn't he?).
