Tottenham 2 – 0 Crystal Palace
Eriksen, Defoe
I start this match report with sad news, it is with regret that I announce that one of the members from the NTU union, who was protesting outside Tottenham’s police station yesterday, was hit by a stray football. Police say that they believe it was an accident and that it probably came from a misplaced penalty at White Hart Lane. However the NTU have decided to go on strike again as a result of this and there will be no school now for the next 6 weeks.
Yesterday’s game started bleakly and most Spurs fans seemed to have the look of “ere we go again” on their faces. Palace not only showed tenacity and appetite for the game but also the required guile in getting the ball into the right areas. The game itself would have been a very different story had Palace been able to finish.
Spurs controlled possession for the majority of the second half and Eriksen finished with style after an Adebayor knock down. Defoe then replaced someone who I hadn’t noticed all game, and came onto finish with the panache that we have come to know and love.
I think there are a lot of positives to take from this game as years ago we would have drawn or possibly lost it. However there are still serious issues with the starting x11. For some reason Spurs are insistent of playing there most talented eleven, even if that means we lose our shape and have players playing in the wrong positions. Our defence is also a serious issue, as Danny Rose seems to be slightly out of his depth and Michael Dawson has the turning circle of an oil tanker. Dembele is a serious talent however he should be encouraged to push forward more often as he has the ability to find his way through stringent defences.
Without sounding pessimistic Spurs have improved greatly since Tim Sherwood has been in charge, and we remain in a strong fifth position in the league. However there are a few fundamental issues with the starting x11 that when resolved will mean a top four finish will be attainable.
