Rule Britannia- Tim’s Top Targets

Article by Sean Walsh

His reign at the club may only be a month old, but Tim Sherwood is already highlighting his vision of the club to Franco Baldini and Daniel Levy. And he seems to have one specification regarding transfers- British players.

Recently, Tim came out and said he wants a core of British footballers at the club, rather than bringing in from abroad (*cough* last summer). So, who could we bring in?

Luke Shaw - Southampton - Left Back

One of the hottest British prospects out there, Luke Shaw looks set to make sure England have a top left back after the Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines step aside. Quick, determined and talented, Shaw is being linked with a big money move for Chelsea. However, if Sherwood really wanted him, it’s possible we could match any bid, plus the guarantee of first team football. Shaw has become a key part of a growing Southampton team, but with the Saints in uncertainty right now, the 18 year old could jump ship for a side of European pedigree quite easily. Remember the last teenage Southampton left back to join us?

Danny Ings - Burnley - Striker

When Charlie Austin swapped Turf Moor for Loftus Road, Burnley had lost when of their best players of the past few decades. Austin was a goal machine, and it left many of claret persuasion in Lancashire a little fearful. Step forward Danny Ings. Born on the south coast like his predecessor, Ings has been replicating Austin’s exploits at the age of just 21. Notably, he has 2 goals in 2 games for the national U21’s, and is looks set to feature heavily in their run in for Euro 2015. A class apart in the Championship, but could he cut it in the Premier League?

Saido Berahino - West Bromwich Albion - Striker

Burundi-born Berahino has put in some excellent displays for the Baggies this season, with a winner at Old Trafford already on an ever-expanding CV. With Jermain Defoe off to Canada (not the USA, JD) soon, it would be wise to bring in some cover, and Berahino is drawing comparisons with the Toronto-bound frontman. Berahino’s pace and agility is giving some defenders a real headache this season, and could play as a makeshift winger. Pepe Mel’s arrival may hinder any chance of a deal this window, but Sherwood should definitely keep his eye open for a summer move.

James Ward-Prowse - Southampton - Midfielder

Back on the south coast, we come to a player who’s exactly what we’ve missed since the departure of a certain Croatian- a deep lying playmaker. Ward-Prowse has become the orchestrator at a rising club at the age of 19, and has completed the most crosses in the Premier League so far this season. With a tremendous work-rate to match his ‘through-the-needle’ passing ability, Ward-Prowse could easily slot in beside Sandro and form a partnership similar to that of Scott Parker and Luka Modric. Southampton may be reluctant to see him leave, but we could test their resolve with a bid. Definitely worth a shot.

Steven Caulker - Cardiff City - Defender

I know what you’re thinking- why would we bother signing him back not even a year after he left? However, the answer may lay in the man who saw his development first-hand- Tim Sherwood. I can’t imagine Tim would’ve been happy to see one of his brightest prospects that he’s overseen trot off to a team with half the ability of the side he was playing for. Younes Kaboul’s out of contract in the summer, so a move for Caulker would be logical, especially considering he already knows most of the players here. I was gutted when he left; I honestly believed he could’ve been one of our leading centre-backs for years. Sometimes last season he was caught napping or was indecisive, but he would’ve learnt from experience, especially when surrounded by top quality players. Don’t write this one off.

Tom Ince - Blackpool - Winger

For the past few transfer windows, we seem to some way or another be linked with Tom Ince, but it’s no surprise. With a consistent goal ratio averaging at about 1:3 since breaking into the first team, Ince has recently been linked with moneybags Monaco. Ince possesses all the qualities of a good winger; pace, dribbling ability and a keen eye for goal. His contract’s out in the summer, and the vultures are circling around Bloomfield Road. One thing’s for sure; he’d be welcome at White Hart Lane.

We already have some great British players here in the form of Kyle Walker, Tom Carroll and Andros Townsend, and we also have some top young players in Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Nabil Bentaleb. But we’re Tottenham Hotspur- we aim high.

If you were bothered you would've actually noticed that Sherwood made no mention of wanting British players:

With players of this quality coming back to fitness it reinforces the fact that we have strength and depth in the squad. And players with real quality and ability. That’s what I look for. He said:

"I see reports saying I want this and that, that I want British or I want youth, that’s not accurate – what I want is technically good players and we have that in abundance throughout the dressing room.”

Typical, pick up and comment on other unsubstantiated rumours and fail to do the necessary research that would show it's false and so makes something of a mockery of the article even if there may be one or two names that might be targets

Oh dear , you know nothing about Spurs at all , a half baked story factually incorrect and of the players you mention Luke Shaw is the only decent one ,I would never want an Ince at WHL and Tom is certainly a chip off the old block
