Sign our Levy/ENIC petition here!

Undoubtedly, this season will go down as one to forget. It’s been a shambles- misuse of £100million, lack of direction and various other issues off the field have made the 2013-2014 season abysmal. This time last year, we were in pole position to snap up that coveted fourth spot, and the media were claiming we’d plan to keep Gareth Bale by signing a number of quality players- how did we end up here?

You may have noticed the petition set up by e-Spurs to get Daniel Levy and ENIC out of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Personally, I think the problems are a lot more than those with the power upstairs. To explain this, I’m going to use Sigmund Freud’s ‘The Ego and the Id’.

For those of you who don’t know what that is, I’ll explain. Freud believed the mind is split into three parts- the superego, the ego and the id. The superego is the part of our minds that’s shaped by the society we live in, so laws, morals, ideals etc. fall under this. The id is the more animalistic part of us, which includes hunger, sexual desire, violence and instinct. The ego is simply one’s behaviour and personality.
You’re probably thinking “What on Earth does this have to do with our problems?”. Well, hear me out.

The board at Tottenham are essentially the personified superego- they’re the ones with the power and the ones that set out plans, ideas and objectives. They want an ideal personality, or in this case, an ideal football club. However, all superegos are flawed. The intent to create this perfect person/club is but a pipe dream- no person or football club is perfect, everything has its flaws. The board’s inability to realise this has led to the sacking of several managers in recent years, as well as the inconsistent spending and lacklustre signings.

Before you sympathise with those managers too much, let me explain their role in the Spurs psyche- the id. Managers and players are the doers, they’re the ones who represent the club where it matters most- on the pitch. Their hunger and instinct to win is what makes this a football club, like the qualities mentioned above make us human. However, a lot of the time, like a human id, the managers and players haven’t got a sense of direction. We’ve seen many mercenaries pass through our club, and those that haven’t jumped ship haven’t led us to the heights set out by the superego.

So, where do the fans come into this? Well, we’re the ego. The players make this a football club, but we make this a true football club. We even have our own flaws- the atmosphere at White Hart Lane has been a little stale recently, many of us change opinions like the English weather, we even have parody accounts on social media mocking the club.

Each aspect of the club is flawed, and the qualities between each of the three portions are overlapping and interchangeable, but it’s clear to see how Tottenham Hotspur is a lot like a human.

In order for us to improve as a club, we must realise our errors, learn from history, and move forward together as one.

Brilliant and spot on. This has been an odd year all round. Great hope and expectations, disbelief, uncertainty and finally abject failure. But hey we go thru the motions all again next season as we are habitual creatures
