Danny Rose in the England Squad - You What?

After the recent annoncement of the England squad for the upcoming Autumn internationals, I nearly choked on my kebab when I heard the name Danny Rose. I thought I must be hearing things. Then I thought it must be the under 20 somethings. No and no.

Danny Rose in the full England squad? WTF? Hey don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to knock a player who is still finding his way (and please make me eat my words Danny), but a player who most Spurs fans would agree, has not pulled up any trees so far (apart from THAT goal against the Woolwich nomads).

Were we not crying out for a decent left back all last season? Is this the same Danny Rose who lost the ball on the half way line at the hemmorrhoids in the FA Cup last season gifting the Woolwich a goal? The same Danny Rose who got turned inside out after 15 seconds against West Brom when they scored. And the same Danny Rose who made Stuart Drowning look like a world beater at the Borelyn Ground? Am I missing something? I’m guessing Roy Hodgson has never seen him play. Or maybe with Shaw injured, and Cole retired, Danny boy must be the only other English left back in Blighty! There’s no other explanation.

It got me thinking about Spurs players past and present who represented England that may have caused a similar reaction. There’s some real corkers here.

David “Beckam” Bentley – One cap wonder while at Spurs. Apart from one great goal at you know where, and pouring a bucket of water over ‘Arry at the Etihad while dancing around in his underwear, what a complete waste of £17m. And £5m of that went to the Woolwich as part of his sell on clause! Overrated and overpaid.

Anthony “Giraffe” Gardner – One cap wonder. Very quick? Yes. That was it! 6ft 5” but not good in the air. Rubbish defender.

Jermaine Jenas – Nine caps while at Spurs! Strewth! Couldn’t pass for toffee. Box to box player maybe but most of the time without the ball!

Tom “L’escargot” Huddlestone – Three caps. As big as the sugar puffs honey monster but not as quick! The Titanic turned quicker. Got a great shot. Really? How many great goals has he scored? (you don’t even need one hand to count these). Great passer. Really O’Reilly? Always flattered to deceive.

Michael “Daws” Dawson – Four caps.We love Daws, but for England? When everyone was fit he was always our 3rd/4th choice centre back.

Darren Bent – famous for missing a header at the far post that ‘Arry’s mum would’ve scored. Nuff said.

When you consider the legend that was Steve Perryman won only one cap for England. Great captain and the most consistent player you’ve ever seen.

I’m putting this out there. Let us know what you think. We all have our own opinions and no two are alike.

Every club has its own “England” players. Can you make an England team out of the best of the worst England players to play for your team?

  1. Agree. These are players that ruin your match day when you look at the team sheet. Still they exist. Add townsend to the list too.

Normal crap article of stereotype opinion. Rose is in the squad as he is the 4th best English left back. That simple. To do a whole 'article' on the subject then continue to slate other previous Spurs players was predictable and just plain boring. Another wannabe blogger with no real idea about the game. Standard...

Nope. Was a fair comment on the state of the English game from a spurs view point. Don't get upset anon, while it wasn't ground breaking blogging he has said what is on a few of us Spurs fans minds.

It's easy to have a go as what you see as poor players - Huddlestone was the key behind Modric and Bale "running wild" - damn good passer of the ball. Jenas is/was a damn decent player. Dawson though not the best - gave 1000% per match...and yes every team has players that don't make it.... so at Spurs show me a Messi, Ronnie, etc etc etc but it's the unsung players at the top clubs that gel it all together....remember Claude M at Madrid, they sold him and didn't win a thing for seasons when they got rid of him...and look at what Chelsae won when he went there!!!

  5. Jenas could barely control the ball a lot of the time. Off his shin. Off his thigh. Pass to opposition. Miss open goals. Really really bad player. Really bad.

I agree about Danny Rose - although being a lifelong Spurs fan and liking our players to make the National team it was a bit unbelievable. I don't even think he should be in the Spurs team !
