While Mauricio Pochettino has extended his stay at White Hart Lane, the board at St James' Park are trying to convince Rafa Benitez that the challenge of reinvigorating Newcastle is an attractive proposition, with many would-be suitors circling overhead.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Hotspur - Venue: St. James' Park, Newcastle.
As we know by now the match itself does have significance for Tottenham, we certainly don't want to give up their hard earned runners-up spot to Arsenal on the final day.
While a draw would ensure that milestone, a victory would also give us our highest ever Premier League points haul.

What a few weeks ago looked like an amazing last day fixture has to most people become a meaningless game. Sunderland’s win against Chelsea & Everton have condemned Newcastle to yet another relegation, and having battled for the title this season, we now need binoculars to see Leicester.
Apart from local bragging rights there is not much left to play for then ? How wrong could you be.
More important than the bragging rights for me is breaking our Premier League points record, set by AVBs 5th places Spurs in 2013 who picked up 72 points. Whilst we’ve battled for the title, it’s hard to call it our best season if we record fewer wins, and fewer points than the 2013 season. How can it have been better? Therefore, to justify using that tag, we have to win at Newcastle and break that record.
Harry Kane is just 1 goal now ahead of Aguero & Steptoe! It would be fantastic to see Harry pick up that award as for me, it is Harry who is our Player of the Season. I understand the votes for Toby, but he’s our top scorer, it’s he that is our first defender, and it is he that dictates the whole tactic of the high press we play. He also missed out on the PFA Young Player award to Dele Alli. Again, I fully understand the reasons, but I can’t understand why if Kane was the only Young Player deemed good enough to be on the main award nominee list, that doesn’t make him the best young player? He fully deserves recognition for his season.
With Manchester United having conceded 3 at the Caravan Park, we have now conceded 4 goals less than any other side this season. Let’s also make sure that we win that particular category for the season.
Much has been made about Pochettino’s comments about finishing above Arsenal. He is quite right. The aim should be to finish as high as possible, and if that is first, it means we are above Arsenal. But 3rd for example to them being 2nd, is better than 5th to their 6th for the club overall. It is important obviously this year to end that record, but in the long run, it in itself is not as important as winning trophies. Let’s measure our success that way.
As I write, news comes through that Pochettino and his staff have all signed their contract extensions. We will all be delighted with this news, it’s the most important summer signing and ends the Ferguson lunch media led conspiracy theories.
I expect with Newcastle’s relegation a very toxic atmosphere at St. James Park/Sports Direct Arena. It will surely help us if that’s the case, with a few of their players heads bowed in shame not really wanting to play. I fully expect us to recover from our wobble, be the hungrier side, our heads now fully focused on 2nd place and no longer thinking of what we have lost, but thinking of what we can still achieve. I’m going for a 3-1 win, in the same vain as our 4-0 and 3-1 wins their over the past 2 seasons. And please, secure that points record, and that golden boot for Harry.
Second will be an achievement, because, this is a position had we said we would have at the start of the season we’d have been accused of being deluded to think we could get!

On Sunday, the final act of our fantastic season will take place, when we face an already relegated Newcastle United. We go into the game knowing that we need a win to secure not only our highest ever Premier League finish, but also our highest ever points total in the league. A draw and our superior goal difference should also see us secure 2nd place in the league.
Over the past 5 years, our record at St James' Park has seen us win 2, draw 2 and lose 1. As Newcastle will be joining Norwich and Aston Villa in the Championship next year, there is always the danger that Newcastle will want to bow out of the Premier League with something special for their adoring fans. We will have to bring our 'A' game to Newcastle on Sunday, as no quarter will be given, or will be asked for, with Andros Townsend eager to show his previous employer what they are missing!
We will be without the suspended midfield due of Alli and Dembele for the game and I feel that this game will be won and lost in the middle of the park. When Mousa is on the park, we win 60% of our games, so he will be missed. At the time of writing, Our 'Very own' Harry Kane sits atop the Golden Boot charts. You feel that he will have to score on Sunday to secure this prestigious award.
My prediction for the game is that it will be a 1-1 draw, with the nails of the travelling Spurs fans bitten down to the quick, with urgent glances to their smartphones throughout the game to ensure that a result elsewhere is not beginning to resemble a cricket score...
The Stat Attack
- Tottenham have gone three league games without a victory (D2, L1).
