Tottenham Hotspur vs Gillingham - EFL Cup Third Round: White Hart Lane

Tottenham will be looking for a straightforward route into the fourth round of the EFL Cup as we take on League One side Gillingham on Wednesday night.

Spurs have been in fine form in the Premier League so far this season, and could take the opportunity to get a good cup run going in this competition as well.

Poch will surely rotate for this winnable fixture, though a few big names should remain in contention for a starting place.

Having been benched for the Sunderland game at the weekend, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen should return to the first XI here to provide ammunition for Janssen.

Elsewhere, squad players such as Tom Carroll, Kieran Trippier will be hoping to stake their claim if given a chance.

Having played at Wembley last week as a home game, we start our attempts to qualify for Wembley as a neutral venue against Gillingham. As we keep saying, it’s time to win a trophy and a Wembley final.

I can vaguely remember playing the Gills only once before, which was also a League Cup tie, but away and we came out 4-2 winners against a Gillingham side that contained a young Tony Cascarino. He was dating a family friend at the time, so I was lucky enough to get a ticket but felt an outsider sitting with the home supporters, and being too scared to cheer for Spurs.

The League One side are of course managed by Justin Edinburgh, who has mixed memories of the League Cup with Spurs, as part of our 1999 cup winning side, but famously sent off for a clash with Robbie Savage. The much maligned right back did actually win 2 medals at Tottenham, also being a part of our 1991 FA Cup Winning team, a feat that no other right back has managed since!!! In all Justin was with us for 10 years.

The other major Spurs connection is Jamie O’Hara, a midfield player with a big heart, who made his debut in a derby at the Emirates, but ultimately failed to show the sufficient quality we needed, and ultimately, saw his career fade away. Ryan Mason beware!! Paul Konchesky is also a part of the Gills line up, having spent a year on loan to us from Charlton. Really, we loaned a player FROM Charlton.

The hardest part of previewing the Gillingham game is knowing what the team will be. I’m sure we’ll see Vorm, Trippier, Davies, and Carter-Vickers, whether we see Wimmer is more difficult to predict. I hope we do, because if not, then it’s a sign that he really has had a problem behind the scenes. I’m sure Dier having gone off on Sunday will get a rest, and we will need some beef in midfield, so I would go with Wanyama. With Tom Carroll’s contract extended, it would be no surprise to see him start as the deep lying playmaker, although I would prefer to see Winks in this role. Somehow, it may be that Winks plays further forward as the ’10’, with Onomah coming in off the right and N’koudou making his debut. I think we’d all like to see what he can offer. Up front where we all thought Janssen would start may now change following the injury to Kane. Do we risk Janssen in the game now we are down to him being the only fit senior striker? The flip side is a goal would do wonders for his confidence. The other option is Son retaining his place and playing as the forward player as we saw in Europa League last season. If the game is going the way we want it too, I’d also expect to see Harrison & Edwards get game time off the bench.

The back 4 should be solid enough to avoid an upset, the forward part of the side should have the hunger and desire to make the most of their opportunities. If Janssen plays, I’d go for a 4-0 win with him scoring, if he doesn’t, I’d still expect a comfortable win, albeit 2-0/3-0.

Teams News - Tottenham

Netherlands forward Vincent Janssen could start for Tottenham in this EFL Cup third-round tie against Gillingham.

England striker Harry Kane is out with ankle ligament damage, so Janssen is in contention to come in for only his fourth start. Summer signing Pau Lopez could make his debut in goal.

Teams News - Gillingham

Midfielder Jamie O'Hara will miss Wednesday's game with a heel injury for Gillingham.

Otherwise, the League One side have no new injury concerns.

Our prediction: Tottenham 3-0 Gillingham
