Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur - Anfield

Kick-off: 7.45pm BST on Tuesday
TV: Live on Sky TV (UK), Highlights on Channel 5, 10.30pm BST on Wednesday

With Harry Kane still missing and Son suffering a dip in form since his purple patch earlier this season, the pressure is growing on Vincent Janssen to find the net for Tottenham. What is most worrying for Spurs fans is that in the absence of Kane, the Netherlands international has so far struggled to ably fill the void and was left on the bench for the club’s 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.

While his hold-up and link play has been promising at times, Janssen needs a goal to settle down and Pochettino is likely to hand him a start on Tuesday night.

Our last meeting was not long ago as the sides drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane back in August in the Premier League.

Left-back James Milner scored the first of his four penalty goals this season to give the Reds the lead after Roberto Firmino was brought down by Erik Lamela on the stroke of half-time, but Danny Rose ensured the teams earned a point each with a late volley.

Poch Says...

"They have a very strong squad. If they play Mignolet, he's an international goalkeeper. Only the last few games he has been on the bench. If not Firmino, they play Sturridge. If not Coutinho, they play Wijnaldum. If not Henderson, they play Leiva.

"For me, it's Liverpool against Tottenham. Football is a collective sport. It's true that when you are involved in many competitions like we are, you can see that I rotate the squad in different games.

"Now it's to assess the team and take a different solution with freshness and compete in a different way. We have Liverpool and then key games like Leicester and Leverkusen. It's important to be clever.

"Our idea is win the game, our idea is that we have a strong squad that deserve to play, all deserve to play. It's a different competition and, like against Gillingham [in the third round], sometimes we rest players that play a lot and avoid the risk of injury, and players who don't feel so good --- it's about balance.

"We know too that Liverpool are more fresh because they're not in a European competition. Always it's difficult -- Leverkusen [lost] at home to Hoffenheim 3-0. Dortmund difficult, City difficult, Arsenal difficult.

"For all the teams that played in the Champions League, it was very difficult to compete because opponents are fresh. In our case, Bournemouth had time to prepare for the game [on Saturday]."

What are the odds?*

The Stat Attack

- Liverpool's only previous League Cup win against Tottenham was in the 1982 final (D2 L4), though they did knock them out on penalties following a draw in December 2004.

- This match is a meeting of the past two losing League Cup finalists (Tottenham in 2015 and Liverpool in 2016).

- In all competitions, Tottenham are winless in their past eight meetings with Liverpool - five defeats followed by three draws.

Teams News - Liverpool

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will return to the Liverpool side when they take on Tottenham at Anfield in the EFL Cup fourth round on Tuesday.

Captain Jordan Henderson is suspended but manager Jurgen Klopp has no new injury concerns.

Gini Wijnaldum is likely to be recalled following his spell out injured and should start, while Klopp is likely to make a call between Emre Can and Marko Grujic for the final midfield berth.

Teams News - Tottenham

Tottenham will rest keeper Hugo Lloris, meaning Michel Vorm is likely to start in goal.

Moussa Sissoko is expected to be unavailable after Spurs accepted an FA charge of violent conduct.

The whole defence is likely to be rejigged, with first choice full-backs Danny Rose and Kyle Walker rested for Wales international Ben Davies and former Burnley man Kieran Trippier.

Our prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham - Tottenham to win on penalties.
