The Spurs Poet - Bill

Bill

The final whistle sounds
as the players leave the ground
Fans have all made the way
...
to journeys homeward bound

And as the floodlights get switched off at night
a darkness does desend
But Tottenham will not go to sleep the history does not end

The ground is deadly quiet
but a presence still is there
The stands are all so empty
but theres a echo in the air

It is better to fail aiming high
than to succeed aiming low
The words of a great man
one we all should know

His name was Bill Nicholson
he was Tottenham to his core
He loved this famous football club
who’s tops we have all wore

He said It's no use just winning, we've got to win it well."
a famous line to his players
that Sir Bill Nic would tell

as a player and a manager
he was dedicated to our team
push and run with Arthur Rowe
was Bills only Tottenham dream

and with just 1 cap for England
and a goal that he did score
injuries badly plagued him
and for st george he played no more

"My duty is to get fit for Tottenham.
Well, they pay my wages you see
words of a true loyal man
not a modern day mercenary

but as his playing career was over
his future was laid out
he got his life ambition
and his name we all did shout

he rewrote the Tottenham history books
with his style and passing play
people wanted to learn
all about the Tottenham way

we went on to win the double
in the year of 61
Tottenham hotspur football clubs new era had begun

Trophys and glory followed
we had conquered the English game
Then he moved to Europe
to share the new found fame

First team to do the double
and first to beat Europe's elite
Bill had transformed the club
to the team all craved to beat

He had made the club a world wide name
and history books rewrote
He gave the club the stature
and was famous for many quote

And when he left he must have thought
his job he must have done
But he came back for burkinshaw and the transformation again begun

He scouted for the team he loved
and players he did find
Galvin , Mabbutt and Roberts
are a few that spring to mind

He then received the tribute he deserved
for what he had achieved
Club president to the day
we all sadly bereaved

A dark day at Tottenham
in October 2004
When the great man passed away
a man we all adore

A legend in his own right
and a true Tottenham great
The day he died the club had mourned that devastating date

So when the lights are turned off
the legend is still alive
He loved the club with passion
it helped the great man thrive

And as his ashes are scattered
on the turf at white hart lane
You have got to show his passion when you play the football game

So every player at Tottenham remember where you are
Remember when you leave the ground
with big wages and nice car

You will always be a number
and a name for spurs to pick
You will never be a legend
like the Legend that was Bill Nic ……RIP BILL COYS

What can one say about this man that has not already been said over the years. I have a few, I was lucky enough (or old enough!!) to remember Bill playing when I was a kid, he certainly deserved more than one cap thats for sure. Retired from playing into coaching, and emerged as the new Spurs Manager with an almighty bang, 10-4 against the Toffees!! The rest is sporting history. He had more than an eye for a great player and bought them to Tottenham, and will be sitting up there with a big smile on his face watching Bale strut his stuff right now. Thank you Bill Nick for bringing years of joy to this old spurs fan, and thank you for everything you stood for, respect, loyality and a winning attitude by fair means only.
