e-Spurs Rumour of the Day - Joao Moutinho

e-Spurs hopes to be your source for Tottenham transfer rumours and news. We will be publishing a "Rumour of the Day" brought to you by e-Spurs Writer Marc Ashed whenever a new player is linked with Spurs and evaluate the fit, likelihood of the deal and money required. This is not an "ITK" site or feature but we want to bring all rumours to the surface for both entertainment and news.

One of the rumours that never dies. The link is obvious, Moutinho was AVB's conductor for Porto and the interest in reuniting is mutual.

The major roadblock that stops this deal from being completed faster than the snap of a finger is money. With a rumoured buyout of 35 million Euros, Moutinho will not come cheap and while we were willing to go up to 24 million, I am not sure if the Levy's wallet will open that wide again. Also, with potential interest from PSG, Monaco and Chelsea, it would be nearly impossible to win a bidding war. Another money issue that stands in the way would be wages. With Gareth Bale set to receive a wage bump as well as rumours of David Villa, we would have to expand our wage structure quite a bit. We could certainly clear wages by offloading Emmanuel Adebayor and David Bentley and that would make a move easier to accommodate.

The move would be the ultimate showing of faith and financial backing by Levy to AVB. A midfield of Sandro, Dembele and Moutinho would be stacked with steel, skill and creativity. Unfortunately, I cannot see a situation in which we pay 20 million for a midfielder while still having money to splash on at least one striker and a left back. The deal would be perfect and make sense for all parties involved so that is why I rate it a 6 but the money just doesn't add up.

Likelihood: 6/10

  1. I really want this guy at Spurs but i've heard that the price may have risen since last summer. Do you know if this is true bearing in mind there's less time on his contract at Sporting?

  2. I know nothing more than everyone else. Occasionally, I read things that people whom I trust (who are close to the club) say but it never includes prices. I think the only reason that the price would rise is from competition driving it up.

He was almost sold to us last year when Porto had no intention to sell at 24 million. Now that the player is clear that he wants to leave and the Chairman is allowing him to, there isn't much incentive for teams like us to outbid the benchmark that they set for him last year. I think price quotes of 30 million are leaked by Porto to get higher starting bids but the actual price of business will probably be closer to 20 million than 30 unless it's Monaco.

Knowing Levy, even though Porto are asking silly money for Moutinho I'm pretty confident that he will negotiate a deal that would suit both parties, more so for Levy than Porto.

Having PSG and poss Chavski also stating their interest may put Porto in a stronger position but that does not mean the player has to agree to a move to either of those 2 clubs.

Chelsea have yet to appoint the Special One so it may well be that he dosen't want or need him, looking at the players they have in that position may mean that they can not guarantee him first team football.

Also PSG will loose their manager to go to Real, so again depending on who they bring in to replace him depends again on the fact would they need / want Mout??

Mout knows AVB very well and knows what he is capable of, the fact we can't offer CL may or may not be the deciding factor. I think AVB could persuade Mout to join us based on the longer term project and what he is trying to achieve at the club and the fact that we only finished a few points outside of a CL place.
