Examination of the Attack

Article by e-Spurs Writer Gary Smith (UK)

This is probably the hardest article to write when evaluating the team's performance from last year. When we ask attack it barely falls beyond Gareth Bale before all the statistics and performances become rather dreary!

Enough has been written about Bale but, whether his head is turned or not by Real, he had a fantastic season and fully deserved all his awards and accolades. Hopefully he will stay but he had a huge burden last season and cannot be expected to carry all the expectations on his shoulders every game.

Jermaine did pretty well at the beginning of the season but was then unfortunately injured. He still ended up with a fairly good goals tally but he does seem to play in fits and starts. I love Defoe because I think he gives his all but is perhaps not utilised in the best possible way all the time. I thought he had a decent season and tried harder to link up but ultimately the team's play in the last third wasn't incisive enough.

Aaron Lennon also had a fairly decent season despite a propensity to injury. However, although his final delivery has without doubt improved he is never going to be a source of many goals. Tottenham to require the speed he gives and if he he add a little more consistency and belief he would be an even greater asset.

As for Adebayor, it is difficult to be polite. However, in respect of objectivity the summation is as follows; I was never a fan and always suspected his temperament, attitude and commitment were suspect. His performances last season were abject and that is being kind. Frankly, he was a disgrace. It is no coincidence that his best performance occurred against Chelsea at the end of the season which gave him a chance to put himself in the shop window.

It was disappointing and worrying at the very beginning of the season when AVB declared he was happy with two main line strikers and Harry Kane in the wings. As it was, Kane was loaned out which basically left us short as post Christmas showed. That cannot happen again as we need someone who will guarantee 20 plus goals a season. If you look at Manchester United it was generally agreed their team wasn't the strongest ever but they had Van Persie. Liverpool had Suarez who probably kept them from dabbling with relegation. Sure we had Bale but he is not really an out and out striker and as I said cant be expected to bear the whole goalscoring burden.

Its an issue which needs to be addressed and, as usual, the Summer is taking an increasingly and familiar disturbing turn as Spurs are linked with everybody yet clubs around are actually completing business. Let's hope Levy has something planned before pre-season so AVB can get the team to gel and we don't waste points in the first few games.
