5 Belgians to bring Spurs to the next level

As we are all aware, Belgium is becoming a shrine of footballing talent across the world. They seem likely to qualify for the World Cup finals as they are currently top of their group, so we shall all see next summer in Brazil just how advanced this Belgian team have become. Players like Hazard, Kompany and our very own Super Jan Vertonghen have carved solid and impressive reputations for themselves in the Premiership already. With that in mind, here are 5 Belgians I believe could bring us to the next level in the EPL:

1. Christian Benteke – No surprises here right? Since David Villa decided to move to Athletico Madrid despite it being reported that we had agreed personal terms with him and it seeming very likely he would be at WHL next season, we have shifted targets and are in negotiations with Villa over this Belgian Beast. I think everyone was impressed with Benteke in his first season with Villa, scoring the majority of their goals to help them stay in the top flight and adapting to the pace and physicality of the Premiership with his sheer power and ability. Supposedly Villa are asking for £25-30million which is very, very steep for a player who has only had one season in the Premiership so far. It would represent a risk for Levy if he succumbs to Lerner’s demands and forks out the cash as “Second Season Syndrome” can strike even the most promising of players. However, with Benteke handing in a transfer request and the talk around the Villa dressing room saying he prefers a move to Spurs, I would certainly be pleased if he could maintain his form for us like he did for Villa.

2. Nacer Chadli – Really a move that has come out of the blue for Spurs as it has been reported that we have had a £6million bid for the tricky Belgian turned down with his club, FC Twente, wanting almost £8million. I have seen Chadli a few times (for those Spurs fans who remember our Champions League campaign a couple of seasons ago, Twente were in our group and we played out a 3-3 draw with them, with Chadli scoring an amazing free kick) and I have always been impressed with his pace, touch and his keen eye for goal as well. This move could make perfect sense for Spurs as Chadli is a left winger so playing 4-3-3 with Chadli on the left means Bale can play the striking role he impressed in last season with Chadli and Lennon firing him the ammo he needs, a smart move for Spurs if it comes off.

3. Toby Alderweireld – Forming a partnership with Super Jan at Ajax before Jan moved to the Lane, Toby Alderweireld is certainly an accomplished defender in his own right. His impressive versatility (he can play RB, CB or LB) will stick out as his key trait in defence. This versatility has allowed him to break into the Belgium team filling in at RB, much like Jan does for us and Belgium at LB. Personally, if we signed Alderweireld, I would put him LB and move Jan into the centre as I preferred Jan there as he is a ball playing centre half who likes to roam forward in the centre so it would be better for Spurs to have Alderweireld on the left flank. I’m sure there is an opinion to give Danny Rose his chance at Left Back which I fully agree with as well, personally, I just admire Alderweireld as a player and would be eager to see him at WHL.

4. Dries Mertens – Before anyone mentions that Mertens has just moved to Napoli this summer, I am fully aware of this, I am just mentioning him as a player who could have brought us to the next level. Blessed with lightening pace and a decent goal scoring record for PSV, Mertens is a quality left winger who we could have been proud to have playing for us. Sadly, Napoli recognised his potential and ability and snapped him up early this summer and their fans believe he could be the heir to Ezequiel Lavezzi who departed at the start of last season to join the PSG revolution. I fully understand their optimism and hope that Mertens lives up to his potential and becomes a major European force like his Belgian wing compatriot Eden Hazard.

5. Radja Nainggolan – We were linked with Radja shortly before we signed Paulinho so we honestly don’t need him anymore, due to our scurge of midfield players. However, I would like to mention that I admire Radja’s talent and ability, a tough tackling midfielder plying his trade for Cagliari in Serie A (although it is rumoured a deal has been agreed with Inter for his services.) He is strong and dedicated and reminds me of a younger, better Scott Parker and would have been a ideal signing had we not done the brilliant deal of signing Paulinho, who I think is a superior player.

May be steep for Benteke, but if you want him, you will be paying it.....there is no interest with cash and cast offs.....certainly not yours anyway.....

Benteke cannot pass and looked rubbish when playing for Belgium. Not good enough for Spurs.

Chadli prefers to play in central midfield, where he plays at club level and for the Belgium national side. He may not wish to be put on the wing because he prefers to play centrally.

Alderweireld could be an option but would prefer an established left back rather than an all rounder. Still would be a far better option than Rose, who is best suited to the championship.

Mertens is not available, so irrelevant.

Nainggolan is yet another defensive midfielder. Spurs already have 6 defensive midfielders. It is getting ridiculous. Sandro, Livermore, Parker, Holtby, Dembele, Paulinho. Why on earth did they buy Paulinho when creative players are needed in the midfield?

I wouldn't mind Chadli, Benteke and Alderweireld at spurs. I don't think spurs will buy another central midfielder we have too many especially with the signing of Paulinho so Nainggolan wouldn't be an option. I think we will buy Nacer Chadli actually because he will suit this new 4 3 3 system.
