The Better Striker Option: Soldado or Benteke?

Article by e-Spurs Writer Brent Weber (USA)

The latest transfer rumours are that we are in hot pursuit of two strikers, Soldado and Benteke. I had personally given up on Benteke, but now that he has officially turned in a transfer request and appears to be available again, I will give my opinion on the better option for Spurs. Obviously I would love to have both of these players, but we all know that won’t happen.

Soldado

- He turned 28 in May.
- The transfer fee will be in the region of £20 million.
- He plays centre striker in Valencia’s commonly used 4-2-3-1 formation.
- He stands at 1.79 meters or 5’11” tall.
- Soldado is a proven goal scorer in a top league and has netted 20 or more goals in his last 4 seasons.
- Last season, he scored 30 goals, 24 of which were in league play and 4 in Champions League.

Below is a summary of his production:

I like Soldado’s experience and productivity in a top flight league. In addition he has UCL experience. His production is consistent and his stats suggest that he will score a goal every other game. It is hard to argue with his productivity. The only caution with Soldado is his age, but I think he still has 3 good seasons left in the tank. In addition, he will be playing hard to stay in top form heading into the World Cup.

Benteke

- He turns 23 in December.
- The transfer fee will be approximately £25 million plus a player most likely.
- He also plays centre striker in Villa’s 4-2-3-1.
- He stands at 1.9 m or 6’3” tall.
- Last year was the first time he netted more than 20 goals.

Benteke came in to the BPL this season and made a quick impact. He netted 19 goals in the league and 4 more in cup matches. He has much less experience and played most of his career in Belgium, which is a less competitive league compared to La Liga. However, he did very well during his first BPL season and he adjusted to the competition very quickly. He too is involved in World Cup qualifying with Belgium and will be playing hard to stay in top form.

My Opinion

Soldado is more experienced than Benteke. He is a proven goal scorer and very consistent. In my opinion, Soldado is an immediate solution to our striker deficiencies with very little risk. Benteke is slightly more of a gamble because he has only 1 good season in a top flight league. However, he has huge upside. Benteke has great size for a striker and has the ability to score in the air. He is young, skilled, and a dynamic scorer.

Although expensive, I think Benteke is the better fit! I like his youth, his explosiveness, and his aerial threat. He scored 19 goals last season on a bad team with poor quality players around him. Imagine how well he will do with good players around him! Spurs must make this signing a priority and get him now. Players of his size, skill, and abilities don’t come around very often, so we must jump on this opportunity. Benteke is the striker we need to get us to Champions League next year. In addition, because his youth, he will set us up for many successful seasons!

I think that spurs should sign Benteke as he will be a star in the future and is also proven within the premier league, whereas Soldado is getting older and probably only has two years at the very top level of football and he isn't proven in the premier league.

I'd go with Soldato. Proven player with great stats. Only thing he doesn't have that Benteke has is youth but for christsakes he's only 28!

Cost is a key considereation, If Spurs sign Soldado for 4 years he wil have no retail value whereas there is a good chance Benteke will retain most of his value in 4 years time if he is a success. If they both are offered pay of £3m per year, then Soldado costs £5m (£20m over 4 years) plus £3m + £7m = £10m per year. If Benteke is signed at £25M then his cost is £3m per year over 4 years assuming the transfer fee can be recovered. Spurs dont usually buy expensive older players. At £20m and £25m both are over priced.

You have to like the fact that Benteke is 5yrs younger than Saldado and has proven that he has the physicality to play in the prem. However, I don't think that Spurs should or would want to pay anything North of 20 million. Plus our recent track record of signing strikers is not that impressive - with the exception of Berbatov most of our acquisitions have average at best. The last Belgium striker we signed was Nico Claesen - remember him? I didn't think so!

we need both if we are going to break into the top 4

Benteke without any doubt. He's made to be succesful in the PL. Young, motivated, tall, strong, fast, skilled and a typical goalscorer. He's an allround, modern striker. He is the missing link in this Spurs squad, the difference between a 5th place in the ranking and being able to compete with the Top 3 teams.

Don't over estimate the level of La Liga. It' mainly Barca & Real, the rest has far less quality. Soldado will not be able to maintain his current goal average ...

We need both and with the funds generated by players being sold, the extra T.V.money,not to mention the new overpriced shirts I dont see why we shouldnt get them. With this pair in our squad we could be serious title contenders this year.

Soldado is virtually guaranteed to be a scuccess. He is an experienced, consistent professional who, at 28, we are buying at his peak. It is imperative that we sign this kind of player if we are to progress, as our recent seasons have been dogged and eventually scuppered by prolonged periods with no goals from our forward line.

Benteke looks a good player to me, and would be ideal as the second striker we undoubtedly need to sign also. Signing two strikers while keeping Defoe (and selling Adebayor) leaves us strong in every area of the pitch next season.

So my answer would be Soldado, but one quality striker signing will still leave us critically short in that area.

Get leandro Damiao I know its been a headache but I sure this boy has massive talent we have been scouting him for ages I believe (a lot of people will be shock saying this) him and Defoe (of the bench when needed) would work great together not sure if it will happen but I hope it does would love Benteke as well both are young as well but together looking at 40 million and can't see Levy spending that on top of what he has already this is time to push not just for CL the tittle we have an amazing team already with these two and a left back we have a good chance

Benteke or Soldado ? Soldado or Benteke ? There's only one way to find out - FIIIGHT

  12. Benteke for me. Although I think soldado would do well for spurs, Benteke will only get better and we haven't yet seen him reach his potential as we most probably have with soldado. He has the physicality and stature to hold the ball up and also be dominant in the box. He can shoot, head the ball and can beat his man with both pace and skill. This guy is a beast and was tailor made for the premier league. He would give us a different option certainly against teams that come to the lane set up to defend as he is capable of bullying his way through defences which is needed in these situations when there is not a lot of space to play nice football. I know people are saying that he has had one good season and could go on to do an Andy Carroll, but for me he has too much to his game to be a one season wonder. If we don't snap him up now I am sure we will regret it. COYS!!

    Get Soldado and Negredo.

Forget about Benteke who is greedy and disloyal just like Adebayor.

Have Spurs learned nothing from their experiences with Modric and Adebayor?

Need to avoid a player who hands in a transfer request after one year at Gent and then one year at Villa. Also he cannot pass the ball and lacks the skill and link up play that Spurs need.

  14. I find the fact Benteke has put in two transfer requests in two seasons very worrying, if it wasn't for that I would be all for him.

  15. Soldado is the better player. He's produced not just in La Liga, but in the Champions League and for Spain.

Benteke is the better investment over the longterm.

Frankly I'd say the better choice is whoever agrees a new deal first. We need to get on with it.

Why don't we be cheeky and have a bid for rooney, from what I have read (yes I know its the papers) he's not happy, sling the 25 million at united and see what happens. COYS

  17. Has to Soldado for me.
Prolific for many years, not that much shorter than Benteke, and in his prime.
If he gets us into the champions league, he would more than make up for his price tag.
Benteke strikes me as another Ade or Berbatov; once the bigger clubs come calling i.e. man utd, madrid etc, he'll be putting in another transfer request. (If your girlfriend cheated on her boyfriend to get to you, she'll cheat on you too).
Yes he's scored in a poor team, but the opposition tends to lay off poor teams, and park the bus against us.

Soldado without a doubt, not convinced by Benteke at all

Any player that can post transfers like Benteke is a deep worry, stability is paramount let's sign someone with a touch more moral fibre please.
    Soldado or Negredo for me.

Read the first 4 letters of BENTekes name!! says it all for me. A one season wonder!! Forget him, go for Soldado, proven track record, aged 28 in his prime, what more can we ask for. Mind, in saying all that ,knowing Levy we will get neither!!
