Ozil? Who cares? It's Our Time Now

Article by Chris Mecoy

Hello Spurs fans.

So that's it. The end of the transfer window, and one that promises to go down in Tottenham folklore as the start of something that proved oh-so-special.

Like many of you I'm sure, I was glued to Sky Sports News yesterday (Gareth Bale moved to Real Madrid, apparently) in the hope of us maybe adding another name or two, and was disappointed not to be linked with anyone at all. Although maybe not quite as upset as the lads who stood outside the training ground for 12 hours for no reason!

But let's look at the bigger picture, shall we?

£108 MILLION

Vlad Chiriches, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen. That's a pretty damn HUGE picture!

This is the backbone of a team who can win trophies, a team who can play with style, flair and strength, and a team who will make sure that Spurs will no longer be associated with their past, but with a bright future.

NOT HAPPY UNLESS THEY'RE UNHAPPY

Unfortunately though, I still see some Spurs fans who are unhappy. It's true, I kid you not.

"Where are all our goals gonna come from?"
"Where's our attacking threat?"
"Why haven't we gone for another striker?"

You'll be pleased to know that I have contacted the authorities and these folks will be sectioned and given all the help they need.

Our goals will come from one of Europe's most prolific strikers over the past few years. His chances will come from superb creators from Belgium, Brazil, Argentina and Denmark, and that's not to mention the extremely bright spark that is Andros Townsend right now. Our midfield is a beautiful cocktail of power, finesse, speed and skill, and one that is bound to get in on the goalscoring act soon enough.

I imagine our midfield will consist of at least 3 of our new signings, and I feel that it will be the increasingly ineffectual Moussa Dembele that will step aside. Any two of Paulinho, Sandro, and Capoue as the holding midfielders with Christian Eriksen sitting in between them and Soldado. I'm certain Lamela will be the man that starts on the right and it'll be a straight toss up between Townsend and Chadli for the left sided role. So, for anyone still concerned, that presents the promise, if not guarantee, of a shed load of goals so large, even Kevin Bacon couldn't drag it around! But what about another problem area

DANNY ROSE. GOOD ENOUGH?

Did we need to get another left back in? Yes, probably but let's not be too hasty. With Benny being shipped off to join ol' 'Arry at Q.P.R., AVB appears to have put his faith in Danny Rose, and that's fine by me. He isn't quite the finished article yet, but given time, could evolve into a quality player indeed. It wasn't too long ago we had another left back who wasn't performing to the standards expected, a man who was the subject of a meagre £3 million bid from Birmingham City and a man who couldn't help Tottenham win a game for love nor money. If you haven't guessed who I'm referring to, it was Gareth Bale.

Danny Rose hasn't exactly been a superstar so far, but he has definitely improved upon his shoddy performances in pre-season to become a decent, if not quite class, full back. Don't forget, he was away last year when AVB started to make his mark on Tottenham. He barely even met the likes of Vertonghen, Lloris or Sigurdsson, and he will also take a bit of time to gel with the rest of the squad, and to integrate himself within the current set-up at White Hart Lane.

So, with Lloris in goal, and Kyle Walker on the right, any two of Dawson, Kaboul, Vertonghen and Chiriches in the middle and Rose on the left, we are quite well stocked in terms of defence. Don't forget, Kyle Naughton is another half decent player who can play in either full back role, and both Kaboul and Vertonghen have experience of filling in there, too.

NORTH LONDON IS OURS

Despite the disappointing loss to Arsenal, my lasting image of that match is just how defensive they played against our superior starting eleven. This is a team who have finished above us every year since 1995. This is a team who qualify for the Champions' League every season. This is a team who were at home! This is a team who are running scared.

Even though Arsenal signed a world class player in Mezut Ozil yesterday (he must have always wanted to play for Man City one day, I'm guessing), the only thing anyone will remember from this transfer window is that it was here, now, when Tottenham Hotspur became a force in English football once again.

COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Well said. Anyone who rationally looks at our transfer business can only have one take away and that is that the Spurs are the real deal now. We have improved in almost every position and have a second team that is capable of beating most mid table teams. I think Eriksen is the steal of the transfer window and the key to the Spurs making a title run.
Arsenal who were desperate to sign a striker settled by over paying for a CAM that they didn't need and helped us get more money out of the Bale deal then we should have gotten (honestly Bale is not worth near the money Real paid for him). Overall, we had by far the best window of any team in the BPL.

  2. Great article. There's one player that I think could break into this team soon and that's 'Freyrs', he has all the attributes of a great player and I think AVB will integrate him into the team when it's safe to do so in order to ready him to make the left back berth his own. I also think that Naughton might displace Walker at right back as he's a safer bet although not as fasr. He's certainly a better right back than Walker. All in all, I'm very happy with the new set-up and agree that we will be the new kids on the block very soon.

As a Spurs fan, I do not share your optimism, which I believe is bordering on delusion. Capoue, Paulinho and Chadli are nothing special and completely the wrong kind of players for Spurs.

Against Arsenal, it was embarrassing to watch. They made us look like a Sunday league side.

I would much rather watch skilful entertaining players, than 3 Wilson Palacios type players in midfield like Spurs had. Spurs were dull and Arsenal played the good football unfortunately.

Dude which game were you watching. We were all over them in the 2nd half? 57% posession at emirates isnt bad at all. They just need that magic. Erikson will fix that and then enter lamela. I think townsend has played better than chadli so far

MRCOOKIEBUN...really?? Was I watching a different game? The goal came from a lapse in defence, from Spurs players that have been in the line-up for some time. Arsenal also looked like a Sunday league team and the article is spot on that they were running scarred and were quite happy to defend. Lets look at the positives - Andros Townsend showed flashes of being brilliant, Lamela was cool, calm and showed vision for the limited time on the pitch and was only thwarted by 11 Arsenal players in the box, Capoue and Paulinho were calm and collected, took time to look up and were not fazed by the tough tackling (until they broke one!!). All these players, as the article states, will be great assets once they gel and get a feel for each others game. There are exciting times ahead for Spurs....very exciting times!

Mr Cookiebun, give the players at least 10 games to gel and then make a judgement. How can you judge what a teams going to be like when some of the newly signed players have not even played yet and the others have had little over 270 playing minutes together. You may prove to be right, but you can't make assumptions about a new team so early

Sorry..last post was directed to the Anonymous under MRCOOKIEBUN (just realised that they post the names under the post!??!)

I made the mistake of thinking the post was from MRCOOKIBUN too (look again).

To Anonymous: Check the stats for possession, passes made/successful and you'll see it was in our favour.

I'd like to have seen us play with more fluidity too but to say the players are average after 3 games is quite frankly ridiculous.

We now have a spine that is comfortable on the ball, can pass, and are tough as nails (when Arsenal were winning titles I seem to remember them having a couple of these guys by the names of Viera and Petit).

Give it time (I bet your an 'Arry fan) :-)

Nah, people will remember it for Ozil on the last day. Credit where it's due, Arsenal have upstaged us at the last moment. He is instantly one of the top three players in the league and he will lift the Arsenal dressing room no end.

In the cold light of day though, the fact that the wafer thin squad issue wasn't addressed will tell during the season. I knew we would lose against them in the NL derby as the game came too soon, but the league is a marathon, not a sprint. They still have a bell end of a keeper, and ours is world class. That will tell.

For sure though it will be a battle for fourth. Liverpool look good and have strengthened their squad, while Arsenal have acquired a superstar just as we sold ours. Game on.

I am a Spurs fan and cannot understand the enthusiasm for the current team. They have failed to score a single goal in open play in 3 premier league games. How can that be good?

There is no creativity in midfield and now AVB has gone and loaned out Tom Carroll. Soldado is being deprived of goal scoring opportunities, just like Defoe and Adebayor were last season because the midfield players could not create anything. Bale's goals covered up the cracks. He has now gone, so we don't have him to win games for us individually.

The Spurs team needs to be built around players like Carroll, Holtby and Eriksen, not the donkeys who were playing in central midfield for Spurs against Arsenal.

  10. The cheek of it. We could have given you a good roasting on Sunday. You were lucky to keep it to one. Thanks to an excellent exhibition of shot stopping, ass saving, goal keeping by Lloris.

We kept destroying you on the break, unfortunately Ozil was kept out of our hands for this match otherwise his ability to tear you another one would have led to that shed load of goals (you know, the one Mr. Bacon had a problem dragging around)

1 Nil to The Arsenal, 1 Nil to The Arsenal........;)

  11. Anonymous7:25 pm

But we have not seen Erikson yet and AVB did not have the luxury of pre-season to work out the strengths and weaknesses in relation to how they understand each others game, and therefore know what the best starting 11 is. The next few games will be essential to settling the squad, and yes, we may lose a few of them, but have patience and faith. If Spurs did not show intent in the market, people will still be complaining, so lets just trust AVB rather than write off the season based on three games that featured different players.

Interesting that Arse(nal) supporters are posting messages stating that Spurs have wasted money this transfer window.....lets look at the stats shall we:

    Spurs
    Total Spent = £103,700,000
    Total Sales = £106,750,000
    Net PROFIT = £3,050,000

    Arse(nal)
    Total Spent = £42,500,000
    Total Sales = £10,000,000
    Net LOSS = £32,500,000

SPURS may have lost on Sunday, but we have added depth to the squad that can be built on. Arse(nal) have invested in one player and sold some of their depth. So celebrate while you can Arse(nal).

Eriksen, Chiriches, Soldado and Lamela are excellent buys.

The other top buys last season were Lloris, Holtby and Vertonghen.

Unfortunately there have been too many poor mediocre signings: Dempsey (sold), Sigurdsson, Dembele, Chadli, Paulinho, Capoue. And a terrible signing: Adebayor. Now AVB has picked Rose (not good enough) instead of B.A.E. None of these players should be at Spurs and will hopefully be shipped out when we get a new manager.

Wtf how the hell can u say that shit. Its been 3 games and ur saying 3 of our new signings should go. Tw*t.

To be fair, AVB was scuppered by Chelsea. Our midfield and attack were meant to be something along the lines of

    Sandro Paulinho

    Lamela Eriksen Willian

    Soldado

That's a perfectly balanced lineup, but the one attacking player who would have been settled and playing by now didn't sign. Therefore we have to be patient and wait for Lamela and Eriksen to start pulling the strings for us. We will have the quile to beat the top teams and the muscle to beat the lower teams. I can see us being very consistent once we hit our stride.

Shit me, we lose one game that we were unlucky not to get something out of and suddenly we turn from, "GLORY GLORY TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - Hail King Levy, Comrade Andre and Baldini" to shit about sacking the manager and how the players aren't good enough. Ffs chin up, the season is a long one. The squad is all important and we have one with depth and an abundance of talent. This is something we have never had and it is the most important thing. Moreover, Arsenal have an injury prone, thin squad, defensively frail, with a shit goalkeeper. We need to be patient, wait for the team to gel, which they undoubtedly will, and we will win a lot of football matches. If i have any complaint it is Carroll's loan to QPR because i personally think he should start ahead of Paulinho (not dembele).

And did you feel wetting your pants as you wrote that? HAHA!

Sad thing is Spuds, Arsenal are straight up better at every position other than Keeper. Wenger had numerous opportunities to sign Capoue and chose not to. Erikson was a pass as well. You mention how it was a defensive mistake that lead to the goal. As an Arsenal fan I saw that same mistake repeated numerous times. Splitting your CB with a through ball defenders running all over the place with no idea where the opposition was, Dawson should be shot for letting Giroud round him for the goal, very elementary defending. Only Lloris saved you from 3-0.

Spurs had 1 real oportunity. Townsends shots were easy saves from a desparate selfish player

You mention number of passes and time of posession. The main reason for that is the donkey like pace your squad played at. My son's 12 year old team plays faster than your lot. It was embarrasing for a prem team!

Looking at your signings I just see more of the same. Different players same ability. There are no difference makers, and the one you had is in Spain.

In the meantime Arsenal added a diffence maker.

By the way, if you want Bendtner he would be better than currect lot of strikers you have and he can't even practice with us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous9:30 pm

Yeah he didnt want eriksen....he didnt want bale either. And he liked santos......and squilaci. Face it it was a panic buy. A good one at that but not really what u needed. Having said that it will help you keep pace with spurs. Might not be enough though. And u may need bentner....lets hope giroud breaks a leg ;)

im an spurs fan and i know it's negative but i just cant see us finishing above arsenal i really think that the signing of ozil will provide them with the match winner we had in gareth. i do however feel that we are more adept to challenging our bitter rivals but still i feel they are miles ahead us off the pitch and the ozil deal confirms this. im also worried as i really dont want this to have the same effect bergkamp did in 95 and provide the platform for success for the next ten years. we have bought well but now need to push on. we are in serious need for a new stadium and when this hits we'll be facing the kind of austerity arsenal have. Wenger managed to keep them in the top 4 with these restraints, we cant even get in the top 4 without those restraints. let's just hope it's the downfall of a dynasty up north in manchester..............#coys

Only a really small person hopes for injury to another player. You put your best on the field and they were found totally lacking. 57% possesion is nice but it was followed by 0 goals. Your possession was in your own half or near the center circle so what does it matter? It was also primarily after we had a goal so were by nature more defensive.

And yes the last 15 minutes you were all over us. But they were very few (1) quality chance created by Spurs the entire match. In essence we ground out the match. Better to win that way than draw or lose.

I think if you view the game objectively you will find that while the game was 0-0 Arsenal had the much better opportunities. Were they counters, yes but I ask you what is wrong with that? I do not think they count less than a goal that is built from the back.

    North London is Red...Again

As for previous transfers, I imagine I can name a few that Spurs missed on as well (adebayor is just the start.)

Panic Buy.. maybe but better than all Spurs buys. Ozil makes our team better, Your squad, just treading water, same players different names. Good Europa league squad.

    You always need difference makers!

i believe the lads we got have the capability to go all the way and finish above the top4 teams, how can we do it?,the answer is fairly simple and logical if u observe how we started.we never had the opportunity to establish our tactics and improve on our team chemistry which i would agree was missing against arsenal and players were not thoroughly with their passes and some didn't give at all. Those who thought Townsend was our best player against Arsenal in my opinion is wrong cause he did not assist when he had the opportunity to do so.all is was doing was playing for himself and nothing more.we talk about tradition of spurs playing entertaining and skillful football would agree, playing entertaining needs all players inclusive to the game.Hope he learns to play with is colleges and understand the tactics of the manager rather than making himself heard to get a call up to the national.
