‘Tis better to fail aiming high…

‘Twas a cold February night, the clock had struck 11, and I was as mind-numbed as a spectator watching AVB’s Tottenham. My phone vibrates violently in my pocket, and informs me I’m low on storage space, suggesting I delete some photos. I do as it pleads, but I stumble across something awe inspiring, nostalgic, tear-jerking…

I date this picture back to January 2012, when we were 3rd and regarded as the side with the best brand of football. Many of us believed Champions League football was already in the bag and we should mount a title challenge, with Daniel Levy reportedly allowing £50million to spend in the summer. Yeah, what a great time that was…

Unfortunately, our season collapsed- we threw away 3rd place, narrowly scraped 4th and lost an F.A Cup semi-final we would have won on any other day. And then Bayern Munich, playing at home against a Chelsea side that should have been walked over, lost the Champions League final, revoking our entry into the competition.

Now, more than two years after the results of that poll were released, we’re no closer to challenging for the title. We’re only 7 points off, I know, but you tell me, are we really going to win the league this season?

So where did it go wrong? Distraction from Redknapp being linked with England? Aftermath of the Muamba incident? Tactical naivety? Fitness worries? We could play the blame game for days, but the matter is, we didn’t follow up on our title challenge, we didn’t re-qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and we aren’t any closer to replicating that season (the good part of it, anyway).

Now, I’ve got people telling me we should be ‘grateful’ and ‘appreciate where we are’. Is that the mentality of Tottenham fans now? Are we not forgetting the wise words of the great Bill Nic?

We have some quality players on our books- Hugo Lloris, Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro, Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela. The final two will be world class one day, and they’re here at Tottenham Hotspur. Why shouldn’t we be nailing down a place in the top 4? Why can’t we try and win the title in the next few seasons?

It’s been heavily suggested by Louis Van Gaal that he’ll be the manager of a Premier League club next season, and has hinted that we are that team. If this is true, we have to realise we’ll have a world-class manager at the helm of a gifted squad.

We can’t let this opportunity get away.

see your point understand the article, but lets just wait and see what Tim does till end of season. If he does the business and gets the boys into champions league, how can you replace him???

Agree that we should not gratefully succumb to mediocrity, but nor should we live in some imagined ideal future, which it seems so many Spurs fans do, playing the 'What if' game. There you go; you just did it with Van Gaal.
