bet most of you clicked that link thinking “What the hell if this guy on about?”. To be honest, I wouldn’t blame you. I don’t think or want Sherwood to be our manager next season. “So what’s the point of this article?” you ask. Well, let me explain.
Before Tim Sherwood took the top job at Tottenham, he was a ‘Technical Director’, which involved scouting opponents and transfer targets. Ultimately, he wasn’t the best at this job (he didn’t believe Luis Suarez was good enough for us for starters), but also took up coaching the reserve/under 21 team. With his help, we have seen the likes of Tom Carroll, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane and Nabil Bentaleb break into the first team.
Tim’s major flaw, though, was his desire to get the top job. The lengths he went to in order to get the manager’s position appear to have been very deceitful. It’s been widely speculated that Sherwood had been leaking AVB’s tactics and team-talks to the press, and in recent weeks, the press leaking news of Tim’s own team meetings only strengthens the theory that he has links to the media.
So, it’s obvious that Tim doesn’t know how to talk to the press. He’s been acting like an amateur since he arrived, and obviously needs more time in the dugout. How can he do that? Step forward, Louis van Gaal.
With many expecting the Dutchman to be at the helm by August, it would mean Sherwood would have to find a new job. Why can’t it be at Spurs? Van Gaal has a history of keeping his predecessors and backroom staff in their jobs, as he believes that the best managers can build a strong team with what he’s given. If Sherwood wanted it, I’m sure LVG would offer him a job.
Van Gaal also has the same outlook regarding his squad, opting to make minimal changes to it (though he does like to recruit those from his native Holland, with Jordy Clasie being linked with us recently). So, what does this all mean for Sherwood?
Louis van Gaal has insisted his next job, which will be in the Premier League, will be his last. He won’t be a long term option for us, but he will certainly take us to the places we want to be should he take over. So what happens after he’s gone? The job could potentially be Sherwood’s for the taking if he learns from the man who once literally proved to his Bayern Munich team that he had balls. He’ll learn discipline, tactics, the players and philosophy of Tottenham Hotspur. When van Gaal retires, the next manager will need to be long term, and Sherwood’s quite a few years away from picking up a pension.
Sherwood isn’t the man for us now, but he could very well be in the future.
