Is the Answer to Tottenham’s Scoring Already Here?

When Roberto Soldado came from Valencia for Tottenham’s largest paid transfer fee at the time, he was hailed as the saviour to our goal scoring woes. Unfortunately, he just hasn’t been able to reproduce the scoring touch in the Premier League as he had in the Spanish La Liga. But based on the last half of the season, one wonders whether the answer was in the Tottenham ranks all along.

Soldado’s 24 goals in 35 games in last year’s La Liga made the player an attractive signing for a few clubs. Move forward one year and, so far, we’ve only seen a return of 6 goals in 27 games in the Premier League, hardly the numbers you would hope for your expensive striker. However, he did show consistency in Spain, averaging at least a goal every two games in his last three seasons.

Rather than look outward yet again for a goalscoring touch, Sherwood’s reintroduction of Adebayor to the lineup has brought some much needed firepower. He may not be lighting up the league, but 10 goals in 18 league matches is a decent return.

The pleasant surprise of the past few weeks has been Harry Kane. While we have only seen glimpses of what he is capable of, his first three full league starts have seen a goal in each. In addition, the level of workmanship and desire has been on a level that we have missed since shipping Lewis Holtby out on loan.

It has only been a month in the young striker’s attempt to establish himself on the first team. There are yet to be growing pains, but Kane has grown to the point where he should be considered a viable option. Whether Tottenham believes that they can live with two strikers, or give Soldado a chance to acclimate to England, is a question that will be left to whoever takes over management of the club. Is this season just an aberration in Soldado’s career? Can Kane complete the transition to a permanent fixture on the first team? And will Adebayor be able to play under a new manager who may not show the love he needs?

Many questions, but at least there are a growing number of options.
