Fear and Loathing in Seattle

Pre-season tour has kicked off in ‘murica with a battle against the Seattle Sounders in typical Spurs fashion. A fairly exciting game that didn’t really hold any importance, other than I suspect the young hero named Xander Bailey, actually beat Dawson for pace rather than simply being given a free run on goal. In all seriousness that was great to see and must have been a tremendous experience for Xander.

As for the game it was an amusing affair that once again saw our back four compete in the ‘who can make the most comical mistakes?’ competition, but as fitness and determination goes it’s a good stepping stone towards the opening game of the Premier League.

Moving onto more important things; we have Erik Lamela’s social media and the tabloid media’s penchant for linking us with every single player they can, we are quietly making progress with our current batch of players and potential new ones. Erik Lamela’s confidence and dedication to being fit and healthy for the coming season is a pleasing sight for Spurs fans as he could potentially be like a new, old signing. Hopefully his ability to meticulously gel his Mohawk and smile in countless Instagram photos is not all he can do and I expect (or passively hope) for a big season from the Argentinian.

As for the transfer market I wake up every day and see Liverpool doing their best Spurs impression and hope that it backfires horrifically for them as it did for us. All competent signings, but largely untested in the Premier League so time will tell in that regard. As for us? Despite jealous glances towards Liverpool I am happy with the potential signings of Vorm and Davies. Davies is young and showed quality last season, he was largely underrated last season due to the breakthrough of Luke Shaw. He of course is English so the British Media lost their minds for a young and fresh piece of talent, leaving the other quality players to rot in the back pages of the Daily Sport.

Vorm is a surprise but a good one as Gomes leaves us with a few memories to cherish and Skeletor is a year away from requiring a zimmer frame and slippers (don’t worry Frieds I love you really). Strengthening key areas is a must and we appear to be doing that in the right way, with a lot more caution than last year. However this is not hard, considering we threw money at players with no PL experience from some of Europe’s more questionable leagues.

I don’t like to talk about speculation because it frustrates me immensely. As a Spurs fan it has been of my understanding that when a player wants to leave a club, all the newspapers and media outlets phone each other in a giant conference call and agree that a ‘source’ has told them that Tottenham are interested. It appears we have bid for Antoine Griezmann, if this is true I think this is a bold yet potentially important signing as we need strength on the right hand side. Although he isn’t a traditional winger I think for all Lennon’s pace and guile his final ball has not delivered enough assists, goals or chances. Griezmann could be THAT guy!

For the time I will remain hopeful, the hopeful feeling I’ve had every time before a soul crushing defeat to Arsenal. Maybe this time it will turn out different? Oh wait its Spurs. Let the tabloid links commence!
