Another Spurs Weekend

No win in 4. A home game against West Brom, to bring some confidence and points. Surely not back to back home defeats? Sigh. Another disappointing game against a club we should be comfortably beating. If not comfortably then at least with some shots on goal. It has become such a Spurs trait to lose these games at home, 1-0 in the most abject manner. I don’t understand it. We are always playing into the other team’s hands. Time and time again undone by passion, grit and average players like James Morrison. If you had never watched football before but then watched a spurs game against West Brom you would think Joleon Lescott is the best defender in the world.

When games like this come around (all too often it seems) our frustration as fans is totally justified. Despite the fact we have a new manager and this will yet again be a transitional season, it is hard to look beyond the same old Spurs. Teams come to the Lane and set their stall out. This instantly seems to throw our team out of kilter and our star players start to look like Sunday league subs or chickens on a farm. Aimlessly running around with heavy touches and picking a shot when they should pass or in yesterday’s case, passing instead of shooting. Credit to West Brom for their passionate display, but where is our passion? Where is our reaction to going 1-0 down? 1 shot on target is the reaction of a grumpy teenager after being told he doesn’t have enough change for the bus.

What ominously looms now is the thought of this display, in the North London Derby. We are now without a win in 5 games, playing with no penetration or guile. We have a tough season ahead and I believe that unlike his predecessors, Poch will learn from these games and make us a better unit. Or at least I truly hope this happens. It’s extremely hard to grasp why we didn’t invest in a top quality striker this summer. It should have been our priority.

I can’t help feel we’ve lost some passion with the sales of Daws and Sandro. We need to improve and improve quickly if we want to hold on to our best players. It seems a far too fragile line at the moment, with each damning loss I feel they edge closer towards the exit door. Onto pastures new where Champion’s League is guaranteed and the home games against those struggling clubs are nothing more than a comprehensive, never in doubt victory.

Let’s hope we can turn a corner quickly and get this show on the road. First off a win against Nottingham Forest would be nice, perfect game to bounce back from right? Lose that game and pressure will be weighing on the players so much they’ll be running in a squat position. The fateful game next weekend is a fearful prospect, I will be watching through fingers, behind sofas and with a plastic cup. Glass can be nowhere in my vicinity.

Please, for the love of Spurs, learn from these mistakes and push on. Its early days in the league and there is time on our side. That said, I work with far too many Arsenal fans, and come next Monday I want to enter work with my head held high. Not calling in sick from Spursillitis.

Come. On. You. Spurs.
