To rise or to fall?

We sit in the traditional stands of White Hart Lane pondering what could be, what was and ultimately what is. We remember those greats that warmed our hearts only a couple of years ago. Bale, Modric, Van der Vaart and our very own Ledley King…all memories of what once was. A challenging team. One that almost pushed for the title and won away from home against the so called big boys of the league.

For those few years we revisited the glory days without the actual silverware. We won in entertaining style, we made an impact in European football at the highest level once more. That team played fast, counter attacking football. Strong at the back, deadly going forward. A clear lack of fear, and a strong show of passion and determination. However, we still flattered to deceive. Finishing 4th, 5th and 4th once more, but due to Chelsea winning the Champions League whilst finishing 6th, they went in once more in our place. This meaning in 3 of our best years in the Premier League, we only managed to finish in the top 4 once. We only qualified for the Champions League once.

Oh what could have been if Robben had scored that penalty in Munich, or if we had just won one more game and finished 3rd. Us Spurs faithful can only dwell at what once was, we can’t change our history. We can’t change what makes Tottenham Hotspur, Tottenham Hotspur. We can only hope that the future brings glory, but will it?

After off-loading Gareth Bale and receiving £86m for him alone and then selling other players featuring the likes of Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe, we managed to bring in 7 players who for the most part are still struggling to capture the essence of the Spurs.

Last season was a mess, there’s no other way to say it. It had us Spurs fans hating a load of the players and by the end of it, the temporary manager in Tim Sherwood, who himself was a self-confessed Arsenal fan.

So now what? Mauricio Pochettino, can he bring us from the slow and painful demise of a once great club? To say there isn’t glimpses of hope is a lie and a pessimistic view. Improvements need to be made as well as a more consistent team selection. Experimenting with a winning team is one of the most frustrating things in football. The last few performances have been hopeful. A strong team performance leading to a win against Everton is enough for us to go into the Palace game in confident mood.

Now the questions are, can we turn a couple of wins into a run of form? Can players like Harry Kane and Ryan Mason, who are rightfully labelled as our own, fight for Tottenham Hotspur? Play with the determination and desire? Inspire a team and the 36,000 that surround them. Will players like Lamela finally click into form? Have the prayers of millions of Tottenham fans been answered, has Soldado finally found some form? Will this Tottenham Hotspur team rise or fall? With the belief and determination from everyone at this great but dwindling club, surely we can challenge Europe’s finest once more.
