Spurs vs West Brom - A tale of frustration

Article by Jono Myers @jonodmyers

As the title and every Spurs fan says, Tottenham versus West Brom is just that frustrating 90 minutes of football that has to happen and will end up being 1-1. It’s almost as if we’ve all been swept away with the disastrous recent home record against West Brom and can barely imagine anything other than Spurs dominating the majority of the game, only to go a goal down with roughly 20 minutes to play. To then fight and pull off a draw with a late equaliser. Yes yes, I know this pretty much happened at the Hawthorns earlier in the season, that’s why I can really picture it happening again.

Back in April we managed to pull off a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom without even scoring ourselves. Craig Dawson technically scored a brace that day. These little factors all add to this growing state of pessimism Spurs fans encounter when their club plays the Midlands side. What makes it worse is Albion aren't actually a bad team at all this season! Although Tottenham have the best defensive record this season, West Brom’s really isn't too bad. Sitting comfortably in 8th, they’ve conceded 24 times this season, ranking them with the 8th best defensive record in the league. However they've only scored 4 more than they have conceded. They come up as the 10th highest scoring team in the league. Around half of those goals coming from set pieces meaning only Liverpool and West Ham have converted more from the dead ball. 9 West Brom goals coming from corners alone. It’s something tomorrows hosts will have to be cautious of.

Tottenham Hotspur's record against West Bromwich Albion is a funny one to say the least, However. The two teams have met 21 times in the league, Spurs winning 8 of those meetings, West Brom claiming 3. 10 draws between the two sides really does wonders for the frustration that'll hit fast come Saturday noon! Since winning 3-0 at The Hawthorns back two seasons ago, we’ve drawn 1-1 three times on the bounce in the League against tomorrows visitors. We haven't beaten West Brom at The Lane since early January 2012, where we pulled off a 1-0 victory. Oh lord.

On to a final, brighter note…The North London side look to make this their 6th win on the bounce and to continue their unbeaten run at White Hart Lane in the 2016/17 season. If Spurs can pull a win out the bag against a tough opponent tomorrow, they can move above title rivals Liverpool for the day and remain there if Klopps reds fall against rivals Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford.
