Tomorrow Dawns

Article by Jono Myers @jonodmyers

It’s capacity slashed. The corner of the ground empty of where the Paxton met the East. Tomorrow’s skeleton rising from the mud just behind. White Hart Lane as we know it may be on her final legs, but it’s still our fortress. We may have had some stumbling moments this season however the Lane still remains Tottenham’s playground. We’ve not lost at home so far this season, and we can only hope we stay unbeaten until the curtain call in May.

The future rises from behind though. A sudden twist on generic bowls and all the potential to be one of the best stadiums in the world if everything is executed correctly. The potential for it to all go wrong like our London rivals, West Ham and Arsenal. Two admittedly beautiful structures taking over from old fashioned tried and tested football grounds, and not living up to the hype. Even Wembley stands as a slap in the face to the sport in my eyes. All three bowls devoid of atmosphere, tradition and soul. We as Spurs fans can only hope that our new home doesn't end up like other stadia in the city.

Our saving grace is that we aren't leaving our town. Our new ground is built on top of our current. There’s no coming to terms with being the new folk in town like some West Ham fans are finding with their clubs move over into Stratford. The essence of the club will remain, and this isn't just a focus point for Tottenham, but for any club looking to move into a new stadium.

The new ground continues to shoot up, and with every day it continues to look more and more like our home. Everything’s moving so fast that there’s even rumours and hope that Tottenham may play their home games there as soon as next season instead of having to have one year away from the area to return back for the 2018/19 term. If Spurs can pull off moving into their new home as soon as next year then it'll eradicate my major problem with a season away…Wembley.

Wembley stadium, as previously mentioned is a bowl with no life. To me it’s a pretty on the eye, but dominating, arena. Controlling Brent's skylines. It’s beauty doesn't dismiss its lack of noise and traditionalism. I’ve seen Spurs lose two League cup finals there. I’ve seen Spurs lose two FA Cup Semi finals there. I’ve seen Spurs lose two Champions League games there and I managed to witness Spurs win one Champions league game. CSKA. I was there when England thumped Kazakhstan 5-1. I was there when England beat Spain 1-0. I don't like my personal record with that ground, maybe that fuels my disliking for it as a whole. Playing at Wembley means that throughout the season every travelling club will play up in what could be a rare experience at the national ground. Arsenal failed to do anything special there in the 90’s and we’ve not been too pretty either!

All in all let’s hope the New White Hart Lane isn’t lost in a wash of NFL partnerships and concerts. Glass tunnels and Premium supporters clubs. Let’s hope that there’s enough space in that ground for the average fan, for the atmosphere.
