In the latest part of his diary, Antony Moule gives us the lowdown on the run-in for a top 4 spot and who will make the grade in the race for Champions League Football.
This weekend is an empty weekend for us Spurs; with our game against Chelsea postponed due to their participation in the FA cup. On a personal note, when we don’t have a game, I feel like I have had an incomplete weekend, and this has occurred once again. Except the FA cup semi-finals, the matches this week don’t light up any enthusiasm from a neutrals perspective. The Newcastle Vs Sunderland match is of priority for members of my family, but I simply didn’t feel the ‘buzz’ of the Tyne-Wear derby. The other match that drew most of my little attention was the Goons Vs Norwich on Saturday afternoon. I was listening to the last 10 minutes on the radio, and there was but a glimmer of hope and optimism that Norwich could do us a favour; a glimmer that Arsenal efficiently demolished with their 3 goals in 5 minutes.
I have spent the vast amount of my footballing knowledge analysing the league table and fixtures of Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal, which has lead me to believe that this will go down to the wire. All three teams have games they need to win, could find difficult and could lose altogether. We have the hardest run in of the 3 teams, which makes us the outsiders to finish in the top four. This is the harsh reality; a reality that we have to accept - we have blown our advantage over arsenal once again.
The league table suggests that we need one of Chelsea and Arsenal to drop points, while at the same time we do not, for us to finish in the top 4. Chelsea’s game in hand is cancelled out if we beat them; which is not a given by any stretch of the imagination. And if we do beat them, we still need them to drop points due to their goal difference, while Arsenal are on the same games, but one point ahead.
So far this article is a bit doom and gloom, and that’s almost how I feel about the situation; almost. I believe that all three teams will drop points, it depends on against who and how many. I believe that we are getting our best player back, our best centre back from last season back. I believe that the Spurs players have shown several times this season that they will fight till the end of every match; this is something we will transfer onto the season as a whole. I want to and am going to believe that the news that Bale and AVB are Madrid bound is nonsense, while things might change closer to the end of the season.
As I mentioned in my previous article, this weekend break for us is a good thing, and that is what I have accepted during my withdrawal symptoms of not getting my dosage of Tottenham Hotspur this week. I also believe that this weekend sees a setting of the scene for what will be an epic battle for Champions League qualification. This is the calm before the storm, and I for one am revelling in combative atmosphere that will follow. Please let us know your thoughts on Spurs’ current situation in our Forum and comments below.

Chelsea game in hand is cancelled to a point if we beat them, but we should remember them & Arse have a massive Goal difference on us, which means we have to be a point ahead of them whereas they can be joint with us and still be above. This is crucial.
ReplyDeleteAll season the pundits have mocked Arse's defence but bottom line is they have conceded less than us & scored more and we need to stop believing we've overtaken them because it was exactly talk like that has made us complacent, believed the hype, and stuck us in 5th
Unless we beat City 15-0 ...
