The debate between preferring a Europa League title vs. a Champions League berth is now over. Our defeat to Basle on penalties has ensured that we have nothing left to play for but a top 4 finish. Personally, I advocated for the EPL focus from the beginning. We are a very financially responsible club and will not spend outside of our means. The injection of funds that would come in as a result of a Champions League berth is around £47mil. As you advance past the play-off stages, obviously the amount increases. Take that figure and compare it to the £1.1 mil that group stage teams earn in the Europa League. If you're a team like Spurs, the money from the Champions League takes you to another level for that season. The effect that Champions League football has on the transfer market is massive. £47m along with money raised by sales, goes a long way in securing depth, addressing weaknesses with world class players and in our case, building the rest of the team in AVB's image.
Christian Eriksen, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Moutinho, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Perreira are the names that not only require CL to join us but are the types of players that will keep us in the top 4 and in the very near future would help us contend for the Premier League title.
The difference between these players and signing a deadline bargain like Clint Dempsey is our place in Europe's elite club competition. It's obvious that we are talking about a different type of player than we have beaten other clubs to in the past.
Chairman Levy is also trying to secure a major shirt sponsorship (to the tune of £20 million + per season) and our success along with keeping Bale and adding stars like Christian Eriksen and Higuain would make Levy's work much easier.
We are looking at around a difference of nearly £70m by missing out the Champions League, not to mention missing out on several class players.
We have so much riding on these last 6 games, primarily Chelsea and Manchester City. The break between the Europa League and Man City is very welcome and hopefully a focused group featuring Bale and Lennon will take care of business next Sunday.
Come On You Spurs!
Transfer Update
AVB to Real Madrid is nothing more than filler for the papers. Discussions over a contract extension have already begun and should get done this summer. Levy knows the brilliance that AVB possesses and realises that he has not given him the tools that he had requested but still has us right up there with the best.
A rumour that is true in the papers is Benoit Assou Ekotto likely leaving Tottenham in the summer. He has been passed over time and time again when it comes time to select a starting LB and his future lies elsewhere. £10-12m is the likely price.

Really the key game is v's Chelsea and we need Defoe Bale, Lennon back and firing.
ReplyDeleteId like to see Levy splash the cash this summer but I remember the last pre season before our Champions League campaigne we thought the same thing and it never happened other than VDV
ReplyDeleteCOYS
ReplyDeletelevy doesn't want a top four finish.. he just wants mid table that way he still gets revenue without paying top dollar in wages.
ReplyDeleteIf you are that stupid, go support someone else.
DeleteThe dilemma is very simple.
ReplyDeleteA trophy is everlasting glory for the club while the CL money goes (as we have witnessed) to Levy's and Co pockets.
The Spurs fans want glory for their club.
Levy's and Co fans have a preference for the money.
The money has gone on capital projects. The new training ground cost £35m, the idea to attract some of the worlds best young talent in future. We have spent £65m on buying land around White Hart Lane to build the new stadium, and £25m on architects fees and planning permission etc. So no, it hasn't gone in ENICs pocket- it's gone on building a world class stadium and club for the future
DeleteUltimately, we need CL to advance our progress more than the money. This season without CL football, we bought Jan, Hugo, Mousa and Lewis but if we go seasons without getting to that next level, those players won't want to join our project.
ReplyDeletewasnt it about 30m we earned from CL
ReplyDeleteAND WE NEVER REALLY BROUGHT ANY PLAYERS
RAFA SO PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY SOME OF U KEEP SAYING WE NEED GET CL TO ATTRACT BETTER PLAYERS??!!! ALSO APPARENTLY THE MONEY WE GET NEXT SEASON IS AS MUCH AS WINNING THE CL FROM THE PREMIERSHIP BASICALLY E ARE GETTING S**t LOADS
AND THIS PROJECT WAS IT BACK UNDER JOL WERE WE BROUGHT BALE,MODRIC,LENNON,HUDD,DAWS,BENNY THEN SANDRO AND RAFA
WE WASNT IN CL WHEN LORIS,JAN,DEMBELE CAME IN PLAYERS WILL COME AND GO THE SAME AS LEVY BUT WE NEED TO BUY EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT,THE SQUAD IS VERY SMALLAND I AM TALKING reasonable quality not livermore, kane and others BUT WE HAVE TO BUY FIRST
