What Happens Next?

Sitting here in the lead up to Arsenal vs Wigan; a match that has significant consequences on both the Champions League race and relegation battle, I cannot help but wonder about what could happen if we succeed in our aim of reaching Europe’s elite club competition, or consider the magnitude of failing to achieve that goal.

Hypothetically speaking, Wigan or Newcastle do us a favour and take points off the goons, and we win a very difficult fixture with Sunderland, that puts us in fourth spot. What happens then? Alternatively, if Arsenal do their job and win both games, then we will be competing in the Europa League once again. Where does that leave AVB and Spurs?

Let’s examine the possibility that we succeed in Champions League football. I personally believe that we have three major priorities that we need to address in regards to transfers, in order for us to compete with the big boys next season.

A WORLD CLASS striker is a must, an absolutely, categorically and literal need that must be fulfilled. Defoe and Adebayor both had problems this season but are decent strikers, and add to the depth to the squad and play their part in a campaign, so we do not need to go and get another decent striker, we need to go get someone who takes us to a new level; exactly what Van Persie did for United this season.

We also need to resolve the creativity issue in the deep midfield. Too many times this season we have lacked composure and poise in the midfield, which has negatively impacted our attacking prowess. If only we had signed Moutinho, what difference could he have made?

The final position is left back. I loved BAE, I thought he was one of the best left backs in the league last season, but this year was simply not his year, and he doesn’t seem too bothered about it. Rose has had a tremendous season at Sunderland, and could be a contender for the starting spot, but buying a top class left back would add great depth and experience to a troublesome position.

Playing in the Champions League gives us great leverage in attempting to fill these voids with the adequate personnel required, and could really jump start us onto something truly special. However, failure to offer CL football could hinder that prospect. Does that mean that we would have to settle for second rate signings, and hope that we scrape into the big boys club next season? Or does not having Champions League football only have a small to no effect on our ability to improve?

Game over. Think Newcastle will lose the next game so guess we're spending another year out of CL. Can't believe Wigan got smashed! I'd less annoyed if they lost 2-1 but getting smashed when we needed them the most. Absolute P... take!

On an Arsenal site they're writing silly articles with "Arse still in the driver's seat". When were they ever in the driver's seat? I tuned in at half time when Wigan were all over them. Now after soiling themselves they're saying Oh, we knew it all along. What a laugh... My money is on the Newcs to draw. If not, there is no God. Or if there is, he has a huge snitcher on Spurs.
