Youth of the Nation

A foray of young British talent exists in the Spurs camp. Blessed with some of the most exciting prospects in the premier league, are Tottenham showing signs of a potential new spine being moulded for the future?

Our U21 squad will face Manchester United in the Barclays U21 Premier League Final at Old Trafford on Monday and our little rippers have an excellent chance of covering the debut year of this competition with Spurs Glory. Not to mention the multiple levels of development (champions mentality, togetherness/brotherhood, reward for hard effort ect.) that would filter through to positive effect.

Work has already begun in implementing the next generation to the first team; we have seen the likes of Steven Caulker, Jake Livermore (although not so much this season) and seen glimpses of the potentially sublime Tommy Carroll grace the stage. Andros Townsend, Danny Rose and Harry Kane have all impressed when out on loan and will all be sure to be pushing for a starting berth in the following campaign or moving on.

Now let’s take a closer look at these diamonds in the rough and what chance they have of a dazzling polished finish:

Steven Caulker:

With 28 games and 2 goals to his name, you could argue that he has already cemented himself a role as a squad player. Caulker has excelled when called upon, presenting neat play and carrying the ball forward when an opening presents itself. Blessed with a substantial amount of pace and comfortable on the ball proves he possesses key attributes crucial to compliment our style of play.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 9

Jake Livermore:

A solid defensive midfielder with still much to prove, which is probably reflected in his low number of starts, Jake has arrived at that point where he must step up a level or find himself looking elsewhere for 1st team football.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 6

Andros Townsend:

Townsend has been a revelation at QPR slicing the opponents defence with ease with his direct style of running with the ball in the mould of Lennon. I can see this guy slotting very nicely into our left flank with Bale moving to a more central role. He has performed consistently against top opposition since being out on loan and scored some exquisite goals.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 9

Danny Rose:

Another player who has shone brightly in a struggling side, the boy with the wonder strike looks to have finally come of age. Seemingly forced into a different position, Danny rose may very well be in contention for the LB role at Spurs next season.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 7

Tom Carroll:

I think many Spurs fans are hoping this little guy will develop into the real deal. With a touch of guile and class he has been a top performer for the U21’s and when he has featured in the senior side, he has zipped the play around in modricesque fashion. There may be another season for Carroll on the fringes, although his potential could reach great heights.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 7

Harry Kane:

An old fashioned striker has been the acclaim surrounding this strong, passionate centre forward. His performances in the Championship and the few appearances he made for Norwich before being plagued with injury have been impressive. His hold up and link up play as well as his ability in the air could make him a useful asset.

Likelihood of becoming a 1st teamer: 5

  2. As much as I'd love to be wrong I think Tom Carroll looks too lightweight. Anyone else agree?

Tom Carroll should have been given more opportunities to play for Spurs. AVB is like Redknapp in that he doesn't give young players a chance unless that have gained a lot of experience already. Spurs need a manager who wants to play the young talent.

Tom Carroll and Alex Pritchard are far better than all the other midfielders who have played for Spurs first team this season.
