Why David Villa?

By e-Spurs writer Antony Moule

The title is a serious question; I do not agree and do not see the advantage of spending the rumoured £10 million on Spain’s all-time top goal score. He was a phenomenal player in his prime, unplayable at times, but he is 31, he is in the latter years of his career, and he hasn’t done anything amazing over the last few years to suggest that he is still one of the world’s best in his position.
I look at Villa and see a player that is not past it, but is pretty close to the end, and do not see the long term justification of spending such a substantial amount on a player you may get one or two years out of. If he was 3 or 4 years younger, I would have snapped your hand off at the chance to sign this player, but right now we need to continue with the youthful, developmental approach that has seen us produce quality players like Bale, Walker et al.

We have a team that has a health blend of experienced players with young, up and coming individuals forcing themselves into the team sheet. Why we would not continue to sign players who can compete at our level currently, but will also improve with further first team action and personal progress. Players like Benteke and Diamio fit the criteria of youthful and currently able, which is why it made sense Tottenham Hotspur being linked with them. However, if it is a more experienced striker that AVB requires, then a Higuain or Negredo fit the bill. They are younger than Villa, therefore offering longer service, and play at a similar level, while also costing a similar amount as well.

If I could choose, I would sign both Benteke and Higuain. They offer different qualities in regards to striker options and wouldn’t break the bank (too much). They would cost in or around the £20 million mark, which obviously means that getting both of them would be a tall order. However, if it was possible to sign both of them and only loose one of Adebayor or Defoe, then we would have a striker force that offers multiple attacking options.

However, if I could only choose one of them, I am not sure which to go for. Benteke is young, powerful, finds the net and is definitely in the form if a Drogba type player. Higuain on the other hand is a technically gifted, intelligent and skillful player with the ability to be the creator as well as the finisher. At Tottenham, we lack a striker who can find the net on a regular basis, strike fear into defenders eyes and utilise the great pace out wide which Tottenham offer (Benteke suitable). We also lack a player to unlock doors, to play over, under and round solid defences and to fulfil the void that Van Der Vaart left (Higuain suitable).

I will support whoever we sign over the next few months, believing in the player and trusting the manager should always be the first reaction. Conversely, I am discouraged at the idea of signing David Villa and believe that the original striker options offer superior alternatives.

Villa is 32 in December - £10m apparently
RVP is 30 in August - £22m apparently

What I am getting at is that there isn't much difference in age but a huge difference in price and I don't think anyone can argue that RVP was 1 of the purchases of the season.

Whats to say Villa won't have the same impact as Spurs as RVP did at United.

  2. I totally agree. We lack creativity at times and if it wasn't for Bale and his goals, we would be nowhere.

We need a consistant striker, creative midfielder and maybe even a couple of defenders over the summer to really start mounting a serious challenge.

  3. I wasn't sure about this either until I read an article where AVB is quoted as saying that Villa would be 'a mentor to young Spanish Tottenham players like Christian Ceballos and Iago Falque' unquote. So it kind of makes sense. Villa's motivation is to attract the attention of the Spanish coach ahead of the World Cup by adapting and scoring goals in a highly competitive league, and at the same time inspires two awesome young Spurs boys to push for a place in the first team. Stranger things have happened at The Lane!
