Paulinho: What we want....but not who we need?

Article by e-Spurs Writer Jimmie Lyden (UK)

Personally, I can say I was ecstatic when I heard the news break across the nation that Spurs were close to wrapping up a deal for Paulinho. He’s young (relatively), highly skilled and has a decent eye for a goal. I have no doubts that he will be a fantastic addition to the squad...but is he really what we need at this point in time?

This is not meant as any slight against Paulinho (real name José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior) as I have been thoroughly impressed by what I have seen of him so far. I thought he was MOTM against England when they faced the Samba Stars in a friendly as his coolness on the ball, strong tackling and of course his goal really made him stand out amongst other mediocre players. I have also been blown away with his performances so far at the Confederations Cup against Japan and Mexico where (aside from Neymar) he has impressed me the most in the Brazil line-up. There is no doubt in my mind that partnering him with Sandro and Mousa in midfield would be an unquestionable success but I can’t help but notice that...well, we still do not have that striker we have all been crying out for yet, do we?

I know that it is a tad premature to be saying such a thing (remember that the transfer window isn’t even open yet!) but I can’t help looking at Liverpool and wondering why we haven’t gone out and done our business early in the striking department. Heung Min Son has gone to Bayer Leverkusen, Soldado wants to stay at Valencia and Damiao has maintained this frustrating show of indifference that will not endear him to any Spurs fan even if he does eventually come to the Lane so who should we go for? In my previous article, I stated that Pierre Aubayemang would be a tremendous signing and I stick to that premise as I am a big fan of his but Mario Gomez would be the best signing of the summer if Spurs were to pick him up from Bayern at a rumoured price of £7million now before other clubs jump in and snare him away whilst we tie up this deal for Paulinho.

Remember as well, we are hardly bereft of options in midfield. Sandro, Mousa, Scotty Parker, Livermore, Thudd, Holtby, Siggy and Dempsey just to name a few and that’s not even including young Tommy Carroll or Nabil Bentaleb who could have big futures at the club if you ask me. Honestly, I would ship out Thudd and Livermore tomorrow and probably Parker as well (even though I love his spirit, tenacity and passion) because they aren’t top 4 quality but does that mean we should bring in Paulinho instead?

In conclusion, I believe that we have got ourselves a bargain in Paulinho as we are paying far less for a younger and better Brazilian than City have for Fernandinho and I do not disparage his quality and skill, I just question that maybe this is a case of the right signing, at the wrong time.

Quite right it's proper forwards we need and to get rid of Adebayor.

  2. Signing Paulinho is a great idea if it signals intent to Bale and other potential signings that we mean business. Any strong addition is a good move in that sense. And it's not like any of the strikers we've pursued (except Son) have signed elsewhere already. Seems like almost everybody's waiting for the Real Madrid/PSG coaching saga to end before dominos really start falling.

    STRATTY: (Cos wtf is 'AIM')

We didn't replace VDV and Modric so he may go some way to doing that - obviously we need a striker. Then any further improvements are necessary. 1) After the past two seasons, obviously we need to aim for the title to achieve the Champions League. 2) No, being 3rd right now DOESN'T mean you can afford to lose to Fulham cos next month we're playing United, Arsenal, City and Chelsea. Sort it out, lads!!!!
