Article by e-Spurs Writer Chris Mecoy (UK)
“There once was a man called Jan,
Who joined the Tottenham clan.
At the back a safe bet,
And he CAN find the net.
So now he’s our own Superman!”
Hello, Spurs fans. Since my last article, we have officially brought in Franco Baldini. Now this is obviously great news and it’s no coincidence to see the rumour mill in full flow almost immediately. This is exactly what we need, not just to try and get a settled Spurs team before the first game at Palace, but also to settle our fluttering, nervous hearts.
We’ve seen the list of names being linked. Some pretty decent, others not so much. I have to wonder, though, why we haven’t gone in for Higuain. He is a world class striker and has a great relationship with Baldini (he brought an 18 year old Higuain to Real Madrid). The only reasons I can think of are that either he really will only move to a Champions League club, or, possibly more plausible, that Spurs are unwilling to do any business with Real Madrid just in case they try to use Higuain as bate to get Bale. I imagine Levy has blocked Zidane’s and Perez’s numbers, in fact.
So what about Paulinho? There’s no doubting his quality and at £17 million seems to be a snip when you consider he’s keeping Man City’s new £30 million man Fernadinho out of the Brazil side. AND he’s four years younger. Some may argue that we don’t really need another midfielder and we should focus on getting in a striker, but to those people I say that if a man is better than what we have in at the moment, then he’s worth signing.
I have one fear though, and following Spurs fans on Facebook and Twitter, I know I’m not the only one.
What’s the hold-up?!!
Hopefully Paulinho really does want to just get the Confederations Cup out of the way, talk to his family, and commit to a life in London, just like he says.
Unfortunately, the “Sceptical Spurs Fan” side of me has another theory.
What if Paulinho is announcing the bid from Spurs a week before he makes his decision in the hope that it would attract interest from so-called bigger clubs around Europe. Let’s face it, he won’t be the first footballer to do this.
I truly hope my scepticism is unfounded. I truly hope he joins and becomes a Spurs Legend.
Still on the subject of Paulinho, many Spurs fans have stated that they believe, should he sign, that the midfield trio of Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele would be Champions League quality. Aren’t we forgetting someone? Bale? I highly doubt that AVB would put Bale back out on the left wing after the season he’s had through the middle, and really don’t believe that Bale would like being back out there either. So it seems that Moussa may be the man to step aside.
What do the Spurs fans think of a two part Brazilian, one part Welsh midfield?
Has Dembele done enough to stay in the team? Is Paulinho stringing us along and should we spend £20 million on Benteke?
It would be great to hear your thoughts.
Come on you Spurs!!

I wonder if you have missed a point? The press generally say AVB is seeking another midfielder so that he can use his preferred 4-3-3, so this signing would not affect Bale or Dembele!
ReplyDeleteSo he has Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro as a line of three with Bale and Lennon and a new striker up the middle.
I think he will sign, I have faith
ReplyDeletealso midfield 3 with with Paulinho, Dembele and sandro in a 4-3-3 Bale on the right of the front 3 cutting in to shoot on his game changer of a left foot!! COYS!
4-3-3 is AVB's preferred so Dembele won't make way for anyone!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are all good points, but I really just don't see Bale playing out wide either as a winger or a wide forward. I hope you're all right though. I'd prefer Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele, Bale and Lennon. Sounds quality!!
ReplyDeleteThese r all great points, were bale plays depends on what striker we sign with a midfield of sandro, dembele and paulinho plus a forward line of lennon bale and hulk that would be special
ReplyDeleteIf we play those three in midfield we obviously won't have any wingers, Bale or otherwise. Bale would play as a left sided forward, with a licence to come inside or even swap flanks with the right sided forward (whomever that may end up being).
ReplyDeletelove to see SPURS play 3-5-2 Kabul-Caulker-Verthongen,then Lennon-Sandro-Paulino-Dembele-Holtby then Bentake(villa)BALE !! so many fantastic players to use, WISH any players signed will be SOON, so they can get matches in before start of the season. COME ON YOU SPURS !! REGARDS Patrick. Stafford.

ReplyDeletePaulinho will sign once tournament is over. He turned down Inter because of racism in Italy (it finally caught up with them). He needs to come to a team that will give him 1st team football of high quality so he can cement his place in the national team. That team is Spurs. He's a grounded guy and honestly doesn't want to do business whilst Brazil are competing a tournament. The quotes recently were disconnected by weeks, he was just being polite to Inter.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a 4-3-3. Guaranteed,
ReplyDelete--------Sandro---------
-----Paulinho-----------
-----------Dembele-----
-Bale-----ST--------LW--
In this formation, the wingers will be inverted, so Bale will be in a relatively free role on the right, having the option to cut in to the middle and shoot with his left. Dembele will also once again have freedom to dribble the ball around the box and shoot, which he is so devastating at (remember he used to be a striker in Eredivisie). Paulinho will act as a B2B (a hybrid of Dembele and Sandro), and Sandro will be the destroyer at the back protecting back 4. After Paulinho, we will need to focus on getting a ST who can play with his back to goal and hold the ball up, as well as score his fair share of goals. I would say either Soldado, Damiao or Benteke. It will be an expensive signing.
Finally, here is hoping that rumours of Levy giving a transfer kitty increase to AVB for loyalty reward are true - we would need to get a proper inverted left winger. One who has the creative spark we lack from whence VDV and Modric left, and who also can cut into the middle and shoot with their right foot. A perfect example (and option) would be Bernard from Atletico Mineiro. I would imagine though he would have quite the price tag. But apparently we are the leading contenders in getting his signature. Of course, worse case scenario is that we don't get Bernard, we still have a fine option in Siggurdson, although it is not his preferred place and is most effective in the middle (Dembele's spot).
Maybe Andros Townsend?
