Spurs sale....now on!

Article by e-Spurs Writer Antony Moule (UK)

I have been somewhat patient in writing my next article on Tottenham. There have been some things happen in the past few days, such as Baldini resigning his post at Roma, implying that he is Tottenham's technical director in waiting, and the start of the shop window that us the under 21 European championship. However, the majority of football talk on Tottenham, as it is for most clubs, is the transfer gossip.

I am not going to lie, I do not believe that I, as most typical fans, have an informed opinion on who we should sign. We do not have a full grasp of the multiple leagues across the world where hidden talent may exist. How many of us would have suggested a Modric or Berbatov before we signed them?  I am going to suggest that we have faith in the Tottenham Hotspur staff to buy appropriately (for now at least). However, I have followed Spurs for a fair time, and have obsessively watched the season just past. I therefore feel I have a greater understanding of our current crop of players, and whether they should remain a lillywhite.

Lets start off with an obvious player. David Bentley has obviously ended his dreadful stint at Spurs this summer, and I for one am regretful of how this one turned out. He had such promise, but never convinced the managers or us fans and he never lived up to the huge financial sum paid for his services.

Now we get into the opinionated selling options. The players I want AVB to let go and find replacements for are as follows; Friedal, Dempsey, Parker, Gallas and (maybe) Assou-Ekotto.

Brad  Friedal was one of the safest pair of hands in the Premier League for the last decade, and served us well for the past few seasons, but his time is up. When he plays he looks slow, lethargic and at times this season, I found myself saying "if Lloris was in goal..."

Clint Dempsey, again, served us well this past season. He scored a couple of important goals, and if you have a knack for scoring when your team needs a goal, you should be able to stay. But for me, he lacks true quality in the final third. I know he has recently scored a few goals for USA, but we already have a better option in Sigurdsson at the club, as well as potential players to buy.

Scott Parker is one of the last players of his type, he is a dying bread (see my very first article ever). I'm afraid that despite being a fan favourite, he was found wanting several times this season. He always ran his body into the ground for the cause, and played with his heart on his sleeve, but his lack of technical ability, attacking sense and physical presence has meant that we missed Sandro more than first anticipated.

William Gallas also left the club yesterday. He just does not have the legs to continue playing at the very top. He has played with pride and dignity, and we should all thank him for his services, but it is time to move him on. We have Vertonghen, Kaboul, Dawson and Caulker as our CB options and they offer variety and quality.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto, I am on the fence with selling the Cameroonian. He has the required quality to complete the Tottenham defence, but he hasn't performed at a substantial standard this season, and I feel if an appropriate replacement can be found, BAE may be off.

Now that is my list of players to sell; some of you maybe wondering where Adebayor, Huddlestone or Livermore are. Simply, I believe they all still offer something to AVB and the squad. Adebayor gives us another striking option, and his end to the season showed he could play at an adequate level. Similar to Ade, Huddlestone finished the season well. I am a fan of the big man, he strikes a ball with the best of them, and I feel AVB will get the best out of him. Livermore is a better back up to Sandro than anyone else at the club. He is strong, athletic, physical and because he is a young lad, he can still grow and develop as a player.

So that's my list, let us know yours by commenting at the bottom and following me and e-Spurs on Twitter.

Huddlestone? Really? I am 58 and overweight but could beat him over 10 yards. He cant tackle and only unleashes a couple of killer passes per game when the opposition are sitting back and not snapping at his heels. In a competitive midfield he gets outrun and overrun.

friedels staying for one more year then will most likely get involved in the coaching side of things, hopefully at tottenham, one thing i'll say for those soccer playing yanks, they are more professional than their UK cousins. They take better care of themselves from a young age. so no, friedel wont be leaving.
Parker, thanks, best of luck, see ya later. Gallas, good riddance. as for adebayor, if u dont want to see the back of him you must be an arsenal fan, not one spurs fan wants him there next season

Add Defoe to the list - one goal this year, no assists?, no no use in the air, no use with back to goal, no link up play. prefer Dempsey

  4. I feel you are judging Dempsey too hard, it's his first season at the lane. Dempsey needed to adjust to our style of play.

Also have you seen his stats from last season to this season.
2012 Season Scored 17 goals in the league
    2013 Season:
12 goals and eight or nine assists in all competitions

Dempsey is captain of the USA team scoring more than 50% of goals for his country and leading them to beat Germany recently.

I would rather have 12 captains in the spurs squad who give total commitment then players turning up to collect wages each week!!
    (Ade comes to mind)

Get rid of Naugton, Livermore both are mid table players at best and never will b anything more. defoe needs to be gone, along with parker and ade. we need committed players not bit part players, even sigi does not impress me that much. We need 3 forwards, 1 midfield and 1 defender plus a couple of bench warmers ...

Can't agree with you on these sales.
Parker-who is going to buy him? Better keeping him as a straight holding MF.
Duece-Really? The guy who scored so many HUGE goals for us and can play any of 5 different positions? Definitely do not agree with that.
    There's my 0.02

Spot on but Dempsey needs to step up a bit and the fat 58 year old needs to go Specksavers heres some Facts he needs to know. Firstly Huddlestone was outinjured for 14 months a very long time in anyone's carear and to see the two balls he gave Bale was worth the wait. Secondly with all the supplements being swallowed before and at half time space to run with the ball is limited shown by our under 21 tonight. So players with Hullestones passing skills are in demand two footed ones especialy if he gets is ankle ack to 100 percent we will have a superb wepon in our armoury to beat this swallowing work rate shown by Dr Wengers sides weight loss and energetic 10 game run.Manchester Utd relished this and Alex Ferguson brought back Carrick and won at a canter. Thirdly he is fast but the way he can pass why run 20 yards when one flick of both feet and its advanced up field without using six passes and facing a packed penalty area. Lastly when he has played in defese he has never been on the losing side when Vertonghan went forward Tom covered is back another string to his bow he also at 6ft3 helps out with Corners would be a big loss at 26 if someone else snapped him up lets see in Asia cup how good he is.Others to go Jenas Naughton and Keep the rest DAVSPURS
