The Spurs Poet on e-Spurs: Paynes Boots

Ernie Payne proved to be an innocent party
... in a controversial incident in Tottenham's history.
A young winger, whose pace and willingness
Came with quite a small ..very odd fee

His first senior club was Fulham
But the invite from the spurs soon came
He turned up to wear the lilywhite shirt
With not a single thing to his name

He had his boots and whole
Kit stolen
Not an item of belongings to be had
so the club fitted him out with clothing and shin pads,
But boots didn't appear for this lad

So, he was given ten shillings to buy a new pair
And the second the game blew up
Fulham reported Tottenham for poaching the player
And 10s to entice the player up

With lightning speed from the FA,
the case was heard within two weeks and Spurs escaped the poaching charge
but were found guilty of misconduct ( the cheek )

The player repaid the 10 shillings Strangely, the public and the press backed Tottenham's case
although it was a further two years before they went professional
God knows if they hadn't found a lace

the whole affair raised Tottenham's profile
And on his debut Ernie scored 4
Times
